This has started happening after update 1.0.7.16, and also happens on 1.0.7.18. It's possible that it happens when using mobile data connection, too, but I haven't tested that.
When you connect to Wi-Fi, after a while the connection seems to 'time out'. Usually the Wi-Fi indicator icon has 1-4 bars depending on connection strength, but in this condition the icon has 0 bars, and it is impossible to use any web services. All apps will say you are connected to the internet, but when you try doing anything (e.g. browsing to a web page or sending an IM message), nothing happens (the browser produces a white page and the message doesn't get sent). The only way I have found to get out of this condition is by turning the Wi-Fi off and on again, otherwise the device stays in the 'connected-but-not-really' condition and doesn't get out.
I think what @Manankanchu wrote over here could be an explanation or at least related.
This issue might also be related.

Edit: strangely, this doesn't happen when connected to eduroam (with a patched wpa_supplicant, but that in itself has no effect on the connection problems otherwise). What I get from this is that it only happens with certain kinds of networks.

In my case at least, it happens with a WPA2 PSK network. Please comment if you have the same problem and your network is either the same or different.
