The status of chat accounts does not seem to be reliable at all. Depsite my accounts were switched offline, I encountered them in fact online. This can easily be verified by looking at the "world icon" in people/contacts app where all my chat buddies are being showed with some online status.
Switching the online status to "away" and then again back to "online" shows the correct status then. And only after that procedure it is possible to change the status to real "offline".
Disconnecting the phone from the network (e.g. by using flight mode) and reconnecting it seems to change the chat accounts back to "online" although showing them as "offline".
