There are lots of wishes here at TJC for a smaller phone. The next phone from Jolla will probably be the same size as J1. But if a smaller one would be conceived, what would make it different from both J1 (and the still secret J2)? ...and why?
Please focus on only one difference in each answer, OK?

You can get some clues to what I want in a smaller Jolla by reading a post on my blog. There are no adds there so feel free to have a look. I couldn't gather my thoughts here as easily.

Jolla released a launcher with Rovio content in Asia today (2014-10-17). Since my daughter's phone is deteriorating, it'll soon be necessary to buy her a new phone without waiting for Jolla to make a smaller one. No, I'm not giving up on the smaller phone. Bare with me. With the launcher I can buy her an android phone with the right size and still have the gestures and feel of the Jolla. ...thus allowing Jolla to concentrate on the J2 instead.
The next step seems so obvious, doesn't it?
Finding an android phone with both small display and good enough specs is difficult. During all the time thinking about a Jolla phone for smaller hands I've assumed that there was a competing Android device. ...but there isn't one. There are indeed those with 4" screens but the resolution is less than the J1, usually 480x800px. The version of android OS is also important for the launcher. "Optimized for devices with 4-5,5″ screen, 2 GB RAM and Android™ version higher than 4.3", says the launcher info page.
A tall order... In fact, I can't find a phone like that to buy for my daughter. They all have larger displays than four inches.
There simply is a need for an uncrippled techie phone for smaller hands. Even my daughter (age 11) looked at the specs I showed her with disbelief. "Toys?"
These specs need to be improved. Could you please help revise the plans? I wasn't bold enough when I tried. Not unlike enough.

The suggestions for a smaller phone are not intended for the next Jolla phone (J2). Instead they are meant for a phone to complement it. The two phones should have similar capabilities but one would of course have to be adjusted accordingly. to cope with the limitations of a smaller size.
That is why the smaller concept phone now has the nickname J3.

Of of the fears surrounding the creation of a smaller phone seems to be linked to the OtherHalf concept. If the smaller phone is built with a modular approach then there will only be one size of OtherHalf. No forking of that standard will occur.
A modular solution could suggest a collaboration with the (also finnish) company Puzzlephone.

I couldn't gather my thoughts here as easily. I expected J2 to be shown rumours about Apple contemplating the release of a new small iPhone to replace the aging 5S. If Apple ditches the home button (yes, another rumour) then that would be logical step to take.
Sailfish OS has real multitasking now. Apple might be preparing something similar for the iPhone 7 family of devices. What else could they offer? So a company that thinks about releasing a small but powerful phone with Sailfish OS should do it now. Changing from a semi-multitasking system will not be easy for Apple and will take time. A smaller but still powerful phone with Sailfish OS would be blazing ahead in prototype form at MWC, but it is now possible to reveal two phones at Jolla Love Day in May... that gap.

Rumours of a new small
Revised 2015-12-06 There are rumours about Apple contemplating the release of a new small iPhone to replace the aging 5S. If Apple ditches the home button (yes, another rumour) then that would be logical step to take.
Jolla will not build the J3 as the company focus is software now. Yet I still hope that some company will build a phone with a four inch display. The ladies of my family (both young and mature) still have hands smaller than mine and still wait for a Sailfish OS has real multitasking now. Apple might be preparing something similar for the iPhone 7 family of devices. What else could they offer? So a company that thinks about releasing a device that would be small but powerful phone enough for them. There is a fairly strong market in the sub-5-inch sector and there should at least be one device available there with Sailfish OS should do it now. Changing from a semi-multitasking system will not be easy for Apple and will take time. A smaller but still powerful phone with Sailfish OS would be blazing ahead in that gap.OS. Don't you agree?
