Otherwise it's a bit of a problem when device is locked while you are driving and it takes at least four taps and a swipe to see directions again. Touching your phone while driving is also illegal in some parts of the world such as [I've heard] California.
The idea solution sure would be more intelligent, e.g. Google Maps-like that can dim screen (but not lock it) when you are on a long section of the route and bring it back to full light when you close to making a turn.
