First time ever, I got a "group sms" or a "group mms". What it looks like is I get a notification about a received MMS (a cloud with the play button icon) on the lock screen, then the messaging app shows I got a regular SMS from a regular phone number.

The message appears in the person's SMS thread, so I believe answering that would only send an SMS to the sender. Meanwhile, Android devices respond to all the phone numbers that the initial group message was sent to. (Not all are ideal, my friend here reported his phone reports "out of memory" while attempting to respond).
