As posted by @neo here whatsup, a native client for whatsapp has arrived. Direct link to the announcment here:
http://www.jollausers.com/2015/04/you-can-now-test-whatsup-the-whatsapp-client-for-sailfish-os/
I have downloaded the version in the link and apart from the app hanging occassionally, it works! There is the expectation of more features and bug fixes but this app works well for now and meets all the basic expectations from a whatsapp client.
I am not the developer of the app, but I though we can start a thread here wherein sailors that install whatsup can share their experience and we can collectively keep track of updates, etc.

If you are still using the native version of WhatsApp from OpenRepos (Whatsup), please note that the developer of the app has been contacted by WhatsApp lawyers and the development of the app will most probably stop. So using the native version might not be the best idea, unfortunately.
