I believe the size of my hand is pretty average and it's not easy for me to reach the top left cover when there are more than 4 covers (the smaller covers are in place) while using one hand only. It is even worse when trying to use the cover action which needs swiping to the left (I'm right handed).
I found myself several times trying to move the home screen a bit lower to be able to reach and use that top left cover. That leads me to an idea of having two positions available for the home screen. One is the one already present. In the other position the clock and status icons would be shown, all the covers will be moved lower and the four favourite apps icons would be moved off the screen. The switch between the two positions would only happen with a short swipe/drag within the screen while the flick gesture would switch directly to the next screen (either lock or launcher).
