Has it been investigated by Jolla and is it viable?

They are already investigating it (look at HTML5 section): https://sailfishos.org/about-technology.html

Hey guys, please keep the question open until the issue really has been solved, please. It's not enough that it's promised on some marketing material. That's how I've understood the policy here.

If you install the Android Firefox, Firefox OS apps work out of the box: You can install them and they show up as apps on the home screeen.

I did not test any that require advanced APIs, though, and supporting Firefox OS apps via android is a bit of an detour. But it works.

I would rather have full native Fireox and Firefox addon support.

Thats really a bad excuse my words suggestion . Running android apps itself is one over head then gecko rendering is done for firefox apps . And the suggestion is bad because gecko is the rendering engine for sailfish browser. I have posted some wishlist / needed steps for sailfish browser which also links to this page. https://together.jolla.com/question/53594/please-port-firefox-to-sailfishos-to-replace-current-browser/#65555

That's not the point. Many Sailfish users purge all closed Android stuff from the system and prefer native applications.
