After seeing how successful indiegogo campaing was for Jolla tablet what do you think about making one for new Jolla phone? Jolla, please, comment!

First phone hw is (getting) old and all still alive N9s are waiting for real successor... ;-)

A good(ish) idea, but not going to happen - at least in the near future. After the company has finished its regrouping and the hardware company (Jolla Mobile?) has started to get the gears moving, this might be possible. For now Jolla is focusing only on licensing their OS, which in my opinion is what they should, because that's why they started in the first place. So focus on the OS -> better user experience, more devices through licensing. :)

I think Jolla will need a new phone with up-to-date specs if they want to remain visible (outside of Asia). Current device specs is just way to outdated to attract anyone who want to buy a new phone now - like me... :-(

Being able to repeat success of crowd funded tablet would make the buzz again around them. Not to mention what a big marketing success it would be 'for free'...

Of course, they have to be able to deliver faster than they did it with the tablet because nobody is willing to wait about a year again...

It would be fantastic to see an updated device. Look and form could even remain similar, but better specs incl. better camera and screen :-) But I also don't see such a campaign happening... let's hope we'll have some other news about licesing partners.

When they announced the partnership with Intex, there was something said about bringing out new devices. Also someone from Jolla stated that they will announce something regarding European market after the current batch of Jolla phones has been sold out - so go tell your friends to buy one so we can have new ones sooner! :D

GIve them a chance, they havent shipped the tablet yet. Once that dust settles and they get the intex phone done then maybe they can do another crowdfunding round for the next device. So maybe SLUSH 2015 at the earliest.

When I thought about buying my Jolla phone a few months ago I thought about the possibilty of buying "outdated" hardware. Now I own one and have a completely different approach:

Besides just having a shiny new gadget, think about what makes hardware outdated? I think it's a matter of poor performance as os and apps are developing over time. But with Jolla I think it's the perfect example how a system can be maintained and not getting outdated.

Still all new versions of Sailfish OS preserve the power of the provided hardware. So give a big hand for the devs who seem to have this goal highly prioritized and do really well... instead of asking for new gear just like the same reflex, we are used to from Android or iOS devices.

I need more RAM. I would also take much advantage from a bigger screen (the tablet will help somewhat in this).

Well spoken. We are indeed close to having enough performance in our phones. It wouldn't take much to reach that line (and cross it) with the next generation Jolla phone. For a more long-term usable product there has to be replacement parts, as an example. The hardware of the phone should possibly be designed for easy repairs too.

BTW, it seems that Björnträsket is even faster than the version that shipped with my JP-1301.

...but the retail price of Jolla Phone 1 has to be adjusted too.

(I ended up buying my daughter a smaller android device for her birthday, a device that actually cost more. It would have been much nicer to buy her a smaller Jolla device instead. Her phone has better hardware but my Jolla is faster anyway. ...and more stable.)

Yes, let's do it!

There's absolutely no other company that listens to us the way Jolla does. Let's give them the input they need to make the next phone.

I would be happy to moderate the wiki page for the project.

It's hard to cover all the R&D cost with crowdfunding. Plus, I believe Jolla really does need a sophisticated HW designing team and a good partnership with some Chinese ODMs. They might already solved it, I don't know, but until then it's hard to predict unless we can fund a very big amount to cover their entire R&D, which is not realistic to be honest.

No R&D required. Just take a phone from a Chinese ODM and customise it. Or simply do a port to an existing phone and sell it, possibly rebranded, through Jolla distribution channels, so we can have a licensed copy of Alien Dalvik that is what is stopping me from using a Nexus 5. My suggestion goes to this one: http://www.oppo.com/en/smartphone-r7/

As a user I want this to happen as you do. But at a business point, this is not worth the effort, at least to me. It will involve a certain level of partnership with Chinese ODM, and sale is not guaranteed so why would a Jolla and ODM wants to do it, it's just not cost-effective. Plus even if Jolla just customise it, there IS A LOT OF R&D involved. And I haven't even considered future development of "Jolla" the brand or company. Doing this just does not make sense to investors.

This is beyond the topic and it requires 3 pages to explain, to simplify, it won't happen.

I design electronics devices to earn a living. We are 40 people in my company, including administration and technicians, and we manage to create about one new device per year (starting from scratch). The amount or R&D to be carried out is how to replace the manufacturer logo with the Jolla one. Apart from software drivers of course, but IIRC SailfishOS uses the Android ones, so nothing new to be done even there. If they managed to create a tablet from nothing in less than a year, how long can it take to take an existing hardware and port SailfishOS to it, especially now that a lot of parameterization has been included to support the tablet?

Giacomo Di Giacomo ( 2015-08-28 16:34:13 +0200 )edit

You must be kidding, you called "R&D" replacing manufacturer logo?! Is it what you are doing? Do you have any idea how much work hardware adaption required to be able to "sell" it? Plus warranty, components logistics as usual.

Have you worked with Chinese ODMs on phone really?

What you suggested is just naive, I hate to say but I won't spend time writing 5000 words explain to all your questions here. To sum up what you suggested won't turn into profit, won't do a long term benefit to a small company as Jolla, and (I hardly doubt) Jolla can get enough investment for this. Honestly why bother? They should stick with their long term plan.

In terms of tablet, their HW R&D is done before crowdfunding. Crowdfunding supports manufacturing not designing. They proberbly doing the same for a phone but I don't know.

Of course that's not R&D. That's what I mean: No R&D is required to have a working Jolla 2. They just have to take an existing phone and rebrand it. That's what Intex will do. That's LESS than what they have done with the Jolla Tablet. Since the tablet raised so much interest and increased public awareness about Jolla, it's very likely that even a new SailfishOS phone will do the same. So that would do good for Jolla even if they broke even by selling it. How many Jolla phone users are there currently? I guess between 50000 and 100000. Even if one fourth of them bought a new phone, that's at least 12500 phones sold, that's over 40 million euros gross supposing a price of 350 Euros for the new phone. Maybe that's not much for Jolla (but my company would live 10 years with 40 million Euros of sales, and it's about one third the size of Jolla), but even only to keep users that would leave because of their aging hardware, or to gather once more media attention, this looks more than worth to be done.
