Are Jolla talking to WhatsApp and Dropbox about integration?

I appreciate many other threads on whatsapp and cloud storage, but I was interested to read this this week.

Do Jolla have similar plans? It would be good to understand now that SailfishOS 2 is almost here whether there are any plans for integrating services such as whatsapp officially.

Having the WhatsApp features integrated in the messaging app would be nice, actually I'd like to see all common used chat protocols in it. I installed Skype compatibility from Warehouse and it works nice except for group chats not showing up at all, but getting Facebook back and integrating Telegram and WhatsApp would be awesome. Especially if WhatsApp groups would work.

Interestingly, its likely that ubuntu touch also uses telepathy for messaging so whatever whatsapp do for ubuntu we can plug-in to sailfish as is.

"Officially"? If you want those WhatsApp bastards to develop their shit for your platform, you must have A) Many users B) Money.

Canonical (Mr. Shuttlewood) has money. Jolla doesn't have neither users nor money.

Deep integration of a foreign (other company, which closed source and doesn't offer a well known api) service? From a viewpoint of a developer, this is a really stupid idea. This will fall back an you...telephone is i maintenance or "no support phase" and a simple api, auth or encryption change blows everything up. Or your "contract" with that company is finished after some years.

Add Skype integration to the list. The N900 had a great Skype integration. This is the next flame war topic.

Why should we want fully integrated services in the OS? Android apps work better now with background services. As such, the WhatsApp Android app is sufficient now.

Also, the philosophy of Sailfish is user choice. Even apps like the calculator and Android support are optional, so why would they force services like WhatsApp or Dropbox on all users. In fact, this kind of crap/bloatware is what I and many others dislike about Android. Even 'stock' Android has a lot of Google services baked in, even if you don't use them.

I get your point, but I would rather have native support in Sailfish than rely on Android apps, to me I'd view that as choice. In terms of implementation it could be like the accounts setting so not forced on users, an additional account option if users wished to use that service. How much overhead this would add I don't know. But I think for the survival of the OS outside of the BRICS countries that native implementation of common services such as whatsapp or cloud support is key.

Maybe it could be an optional install like the Skype support that's aviable in Warehouse. That way everyone who wants to use it could install it and everyone who doesn't ignores this additional entry in the store.

Of course I have no objection against optional support for those services (I use both WA and Dropbox myself). It would be great to have some kind of easy plug in to integrate them easily. Just as long as they are optional and/or don't take up too many resources.

do you still get disconnects with the android version of WhatsApp? I leave it running and after a long time I don't see messages being received. I have to quit and restart WhatsApp to get it connected to the network again.

also, with the android version, I seem to always be "Online" in my WhatsApp status. am I doing something wrong?

@droll I don't know about those questions; I haven't watched/tested this closely. All I notice is that notifications sounds come in, even if the app is not running. I did notice I had to open the app once after the update to also see notification icons. But not sure if this always needs to be done, or if it was just a one time thing.
