SailfishOS 2.0 on the way on becomming "normal"

I'm a Jolla user since the first crowdfunding campaign, and I was very pleased with the looks ond the feels of this operating system. Since 2.0 (1.1.9) it took a turn for the worst. I just have to list all my disappointments with this release.

  • Unlock is slow (the unlock animation takes way too long and makes the phone sluggish)
  • Unlock left/right swipe (if used with one hand, you not always swipe that accurately, it can trigger the pully menu instead
  • Ambience wallpaper is now a normal wallpaper (no vertical scrolling of the wallpaper = missing fancies)
  • Power% Time Connectivity on top makes my clean look of the home screen into an Android like looking home screen
  • Peak and the time is now displayed tiny, since the lock screen is no more
  • If you want events accessible from everywhere, left and right swipe tend to be inconsistent. Left and right hand usage is now different. Bottom events had been the same for left and right hand usage
  • Buttons for "smart" covers are an awful idea for various reasons like pressing them instead of opening the app and vice versa
  • App drawer is black. Just black.
  • Twitter and Facebook feed (last 10 events) is now gone from events?
  • remorse timer looks like something from the past. like, remove fancy and add something with buttons, what is also hard to read
  • "new" buttons look.... not so good
  • "new" pully menu looks inconsistent (I don't know how to describe it better, the best look was 1.7 with the Flat Ui Tweak enabled)
  • "new" pully menu is way to slow and obstructs workflow (its not slow if you press item directly? any reason for that inconsistency?)

From the release note:

- Feeds support for Facebook and Twitter accounts are temporarily unavailable (will be re-introduced in the next release)

One things that bothers me the most: the little animation on pulley menus when the option is selected. The animation takes time away from the actual action and I don't like that. Also the fact that I now cannot close the screen with just one movement is bad in my opinion.

The release notes also say that the new pulley menu will be sped up.

Except for few items, I don't agree with you. You just mentioned all changes. Change is not necessarily bad.

Even those button cover actions which I don't like much, are still unlike. And fast. If we're not accustomed to it, that won't mean it's a bad idea.

I on the other hand, have very different opinion. I'm very visual person and for me, almost all of your list items are things i like and i think they have gone in better direction.

first of all, i love new unlock-shading-thingy. It just looks awesome for me and i like it alot.

unlock for me is very big improvement, i like that i can access all my apps directly from unlock screen (from down to up)

About ambiance i agree with you. i liked that it moved along. same thing with app drawer, i would like that background would be like before (but with dimming removed so it would be wallpaper all the way to the last app page, not going finally black)

For the battery/time/connectivity bar i have waited something like this change for a long. they were so unhandy and inconvinient before, so for me, this is big improvement. Example on the old system, when i unlocked, i had to scroll down to see battery which was stupid. that lead to that i couldnt check my battery level or connection type by only checking sneak peek. i agree that they might be better if they were bigger.

notification screen availability from left side is of course everyones opinion, but for me, its more useful that apps are available from bottom on everywhere.

i dont have twitter nor facebook so no saying to that.

remorse timer looks so much more fancy and elegant right now, of course thats just my opinion.

And same with buttons and specially with pulley menu, those are one of the best visual changes.

My opinions are probably so different than yours becouse of few reasons. First, i appreciate more good look and beauty of smoothness, feel of use and beatiful animations than speed or that ui is "snappy". That is of course becouse, like i said, i'm visual person. Same goes with hardware. i love big (5-6 inch on phones) screens and tiny bezel, around-the-edge front glass and things like that. Very unconvinient and easily breaking, but beautiful.

another thing which affects my opinion is that i loved meego and they are now bringing meego-ish things back, like notifications from side.

Anyhow, thanks for your opinion!

I agree with you. The UI from a beginners perspective improved a lot.

Nice smooth animations for the lock screen and even the pull down menu with its short animation style which shows which menuitem you actually "pressed" is really cool and a nice addition.

As a compromise I would however put simply an option in the settings which allows you to disable animation on lockscreen (so all elements appear as soon as you double tap) and this pulley menu item animation. By default those should be enabled and if one wishes can be disabled in the settings.

As for the rest I think it is clearly visible to me that Jolla did some heavy usability testing with "normal" people that lead to these changes in the UI. And they are very good.

for what is good OS where the improvements for the beginners ruining whole usability for normal/daily even bussiness use,

finaly all beginers will get some experiences, they will move to common or advanced users group ...

it is true that first minutes with sailfish v1 are bit about learning and forgeting old habbits. but next day if you have to operate with another mainstream OS you asking yourself why this is so stupid while jolla is nicely unlike...

my feeling from sailfish2 is that they want to make very similar system for the masses.

Have an upvote, as I mostly agree with you. I'm liking what I see with the UI direction and agree about the regression towards a more Meego feel. I'm quite excited to get my tablet and get a good feel of it on a larger device.

“but with dimming removed so it would be wallpaper all the way to the last app page, not going finally black”

So if you have many pages for apps, how can the background come with you to the end?

AliN ( 2015-09-09 22:13:08 +0300 )edit

@AliNa i mean that in old SF when you scrolled down the app list, background gets darker and darker. i dont want that, i want that the backround of app drawer is fully transparent (so that wallpaper can be seen on background) and apps.will just come on "top" of the open apps screen.

Let's all make one of these 'here's a list of things I don't like' posts, I'm sure that would be very useful and easy for developers to extract the most common annoyances from. There definitely isn't any way to do this by splitting up in separate issues that people can vote for, with clear and thoroughly explained ways to make the bad things better.

Funny! :) But you should put a sarcasm tags around your answer or people are going to take you literally... Not that they need encouragement.

After watching preview videos half a year ago i was very sceptical about the direction of sailishos. still i wanted to try it out. Now after trying ot out for a day and half i have to say that its the best UI ever. all the things i found annoying (swipe to lock, flich up to unlock, remove animation on press in pulleys etc) are solved with patches before the release reached the opt-in status. i think people make too big of a shit storm over the things that are fixed or being worked on. and for those loving the ui from v1 probably someone will make a patch or pkg for that too.

+1 for Unlock from side of the screen; sucks big time (tm) :/

+1 for cover actions; the sliding was so much better

-1 for Twitter / Facebook; for me they have worked fine; and I actually like the status screen better now than what it was before.

I liked the Twitter and FB feeds. I do not see them now on 1.1.9 in the events view...

From the development roadmap:

  • Re-enable feeds support in the new UI

So it's not yet finished, as is not the release.

@raketti thanks

renegade22 ( 2015-09-09 14:52:00 +0300 )edit

@renegade22 - no problem. :)

Does 're-enable feed support' mean merge them together chronologically, and load FB news instead of notifications? Not that I was a fan of the N9 news feed or anything...

the good things first ;-)

  • app reachable from botton everywhere is good
  • notification reachable from everywhere also, BUT i would switch app close and notification (most of the time you want to close app, and this is easier from left then right)
  • removed ambiences from home (swipe from right) is good

bad things

  • lock phone + tap (but the patch is good ;-)
  • no silence phone on quick access
  • notifications were so nice, looked well included in os, now they look like a pop up, realy poor
  • buttons are ugly
  • pulley menues are ugly
  • no ambience background in apps looks poor

100% agree

i have no favorites ambiences in v1 so no distrubing menu from side slide ;)

switchign ambiences were cool first day with my jolla, and when you do presentation to some friend who is depended on used fruids, i only made few changes in all colors, to get best results for sharp summer sun light, then changed backgroud twice maybe, made own ambience package in case i lost my device and i see no fun from changing it anymore ;) so it is waste to use side swipe for that

what i would like to see back is clear:

  • buttons
  • pulleys
  • cover page slide left/right
  • close app by topdown swipe, second swipe to lock phone
  • go home by inside swipe

Yes, we actually can see how to destroy a beautiful UI ... not making small improvements every time, just throw all good ideas away, look at android and windows phone and change all. The users just Ignored.

I'm wondering how bad they think about their first ideas of a better UI
