After a few days of using the new UI, I just realized, that this UI is made for the new baby "tablet". Why do have all the phone users now fiddling with a tablet UI? It is quite uncomfortable on the phone. Give me back my phone, please.

Au contraire mon ami, I find it rather pkeasing and comfortable on the phone. Most things are much more intuitive than before. There are a few inconsistencies and rough edges but remember this is only a preview of 2.0. I am sure it will get even better with time.

(I downvoted you b/c I saw your post of two days ago about almost the same subject. Critic imho should be more substantiated. On the positive side, I fixed a small typo for you in the title.. hope you appreciate it:)

How is this tagged as feature request or idea ? It is just plain trolling.

@chappi downvoting is fine, but two days ago it was not almost the same topic. On that time i did not realized, the UI is much more optimized for the tablet, then the phone. For example the closing apps without removing the covers makes only sence for big screens. Thanks for fixing typos.

@leszek The feature request is to give me back my phone UI. Trolling feels your comment.

Actually there are some tablet-related things in 2.0 that kinda feel shoehorned to the smartphone form factor, such as the swipe based carousel page switching. The swipe based page switching makes much more sense on a tablet, when reaching the left/right screen edge might be sometimes less comfortable than just using a horizontal swipe.

But on a smartphone form factor edge swipes would be just fine and the horizontal swipe is redundant and has cost us cover action gestures... As if there was no horizontal swipe on the even screen we could use gestures on events, such a swiping them away to clear them, etc. (related question)

I can understand why is Jolla doing this (single UI code base to qrite & test, single set of UI skills to learn, etc.) but that still does not change the fact that some things are sub-optimal as a result.

I'm a user, not a believer, tried many systems, even firefox Os and get stucked on the jolla phone, even lack of important features, like proper caldav or encryption or even trivial things like text selection.

Two days ago, someone told me here is not the place for discuss some things, but I do not know another site to do that, so I opened a feature request: "give me back ma phone". Should be easy to understand. And yes I guessed (expected) to get downvoted, because most seems believers, not thinkers.

And yes, I can handle the new UI and I can learn new actions and behaviors. Wanna know where I'm now? Ok.

When I made a fresh boot, I starting the first 6 apps, because I can remember 6 places on the home screen....sadly not more. So it takes a while, but it is easier then rearrange later on. Swipe from top is lock the device. I do never kill apps manually by my own, because it is not my job to think for the OS, the OS has to think for him self. Double tap brings the home screen in my configuration. So just double tap and tap one of the 6 apps I can remember. It is usable, but not comfortable to orient my worklflow on the UI.

Fro example, one use-case happens to me today: I had 25 apps opened, on the home screen. I do not care, if this is running or not, there just here. From the notification screen I hit on a notification an the right app opens an show up. Sadly one of the apps out from the 6 I remember. I had to switch to my password manager to copy a password and had to go back to the app, but I didn't find it anymore. scrolling up and down, all looks similar. Well I remember to swipe from the edge brings the grid (appstarter or how it is named), where I will find my app, because the symbols differ quite more, then the tiles on the home screen. Well, what should I think about?

I'm not a believer, just a user...many story's I could tell you here, but to heavy for me to do it in English, sorry.

My feature request is still: "Give me back my phone, please."

25 apps opened, hmm, I wonder how you manage to use a computer. Do you really never close apps? How much RAM do you have installed then?

Sthocs ( 2015-09-12 03:47:37 +0300 )edit

mostly opend about 30 Websites , one IDE and a lot of programms plus at least 50 to 100 os related Services , some severs...yes enought RAM. And when the RAM is not enought, my linux kills some app.

poddl ( 2015-09-12 10:55:57 +0300 )edit

And it is just an use case. Enoght to open the notification, go back and the app is gone, you are on the home screen. now searching the place from the closed app? What is here improoved? It is just made for tablets with bigger scteens.

Ok, I undid my downvote. Still I don't see what one could do with a feature request like 'Give me back my phone, please'. It's simplistic, lurid and unfair imho. I'm convinced that the Jolla designers didn't forget the phone (but there are many and sometimes opposing points of view when designing a UI, don't you think so?). - Have a look at this feedback, which has a style which is more inline with what I wish/hope to see on together.jolla.

You are right, it's fairly clear that the team were working on the UI from a tablet device perspective, and put it on the phone so they don't have two code branches to maintain. This is completely understandable given they are about to ship their first tablet device, and that has been a major focus for some time now.

However, this is just the first release of the new UI, and we have already been told to be patient because more is coming in the next release. I would expect that in the coming releases we will begin to see some minor differences between the phone and tablet as the UI can adapt between screen sizes and capabilities.

It's now been a week since I upgraded, and I'm fairly used to the changes now. As a foundation it seems to be quite good, but is in need of some small improvements here and there to approach optimum, so be patient and give your suggestions.

Hear, hear. :)

While there are things with the new UI/UX that I still have a hard time understanding, I do think that the foundation is good. 2.0 is faster and more stable on my phone so far. So with the next iterations we will see whether 2.0 is usable on a phone or not. :)

I do not believe the carousel to be impossible to use; it actually is quite handly. Personally, the only thing that is really missing from the SF 2.0 is the fact that locking can occour ONLY with button press. The swipe gesture was excellent in that regard.

With my tablet coming hopefully soon, I actually like the fact that phone and tablet both run the same OS and UI, as this consistency will improve the user experience of both.

I found another way around the unclear homescreen and inconsistent ui

I installed this patch: "Force large covers", this makes sense since the home screen is scrollable. Then I disabled the lock screen like in this post and installed the patch "Restore swipe to lock"

Now a double tap brings me to the homescreen, a swipe from top, locks the device, is pretty fast.

The patch "Add favorites into eventsview" to have a usable eventsview. In this way it is possible to go with the 2.0 ui, expect the behavior ot the wrong sorting of the apps at the home screen. I would prefer to use it like a task manager, the last opened app at the first place, like before. And the closes apps should be at last and it should be marked at closed, like in the screenshot i made. Of course the icon roe on bottom is needed for a phone, for emergency calls absolutely.

normal home screen

recently closed apps

Reset your device to factory settings may help you.

Yeah, but it's a hassle. Can't you downgrade by the command line?

pichlo ( 2015-09-12 01:19:00 +0300 )edit

I don't know, but i installed the 1.1.9 with this method. "devel-su ssu release 1.1.9.28 version --dup"

I tried to back on 1.1.7 by the same way, but didn't work. factory reset gave me a old version ( don't remember something like 1.0.4 i guess ).

I found a way arround the unclear homescreen, just found a way to use the phone as a phone:

I use only three gestures. Wenn unlocking, i swipe from left, ist there a notififation. If i wanna start an app, I sipe from bottom up. If I wanna lock, swipe from top (patch installed, to lock directly).

I sorted the app starter in this way to have most used apps on bottom, yes bottom, because the way is more comfortable to reach. So if I wanna switch from one to another app, i swipe up and open the starter, beacuse the starter is clear compared to the homescreen. And the homescreen tiles, with live update are not longer working, because even the closed apps show like there are opened without update the tile.

Yes it is a bit like using android, which one never get rid of the missing task manager. The new UI from jolla also removed the good working task manager, so using no homescreen at all, makes the phone quite quick usable again, and no need the pseudo open source google stuff. Needs only 3 gestures ans can be used very quickly, thanks to the jolla devs.
