How do I get to the lock screen without blanking out the device with the abominational pull-tap through the ambience selector? I would like to access the pull-down shortcut menu and get a quick overview of the device status without locking and unlocking the device completely every time I like to do that.

What you may put at the lockscreen pulley is right under your thumb from the app drawer. Just a swipe from the bottom edge, no matter where you are.

All the information are at the status bar at home. No peeks needed from home. Easier in fact.

I think that you have to return to the os 1.1.7.28 or before. Since updated the os 1.1.9.28, so sad we are !

You do not have to ˝blank out˝ the screen with the pulley menu. You do not have to pull it all the way down with Your finger. It is already responsive partly down. So You can swipe from top a little (quick), then do a tap. Similar to a double tap, but this is swipe-and-tap. Try it, it is quicker than the old swipe down and release.

I really don't understand how can you say that it is qucikier.. it is almost twice as slower... i personally will not update to 1.1.9, because of this stupid changes... at2.0 is at least planned to take back the swipe down to lock (as possibility in settings)

"it is almost twice as slower"

No, it isn't. Previously, you had to swipe from the side, then swipe from the top, which required you to switch hand positions, or hold your phone with two hands. Now you swipe from the top and tap at the top, which doesn't require any switching around and can be done with one hand.

The setting to close an application when swiping from the top is already there in the settings. Now please update or your device will eventually get hacked by someone exploiting security issues in whatever older version of Sailfish OS you're using.

Yes, please update! i jumped into cold water and disliked it for several reasons first. after using it for 3 weeks now i disabled all patches i thought i needed to overcome the changes. Now, only "vertical unlock gesture" patch remains because i now find the new ui paradigm much faster in many situations than to stubbornly stick to old behaviours (by patches)! There are some things that sound awkward first, but a totally sane when actually using them!!
