Lock screen/unlock gesture usability issue [released]
The other night I realized why I had issues with the unlock gesture and visual feedback from the lock screen. While the gesture needed for unlocking the screen is horizontal the visual feedback is vertical, with the clock moving upwards. That movement contradicts the unlocking gesture. With SfOS 1 you also had the bouncing effect hinting the horizontal flick/pull.
Adding to that, the hinting arrows comes from outsides the display in the new lock screen and that might hint tje user to use swipe, while all that is needed is a pull. And using small arrows may lead the user to think that only that area where the arrow is is valid swipe target.
Edit: for the last inconsistency @ScumCoder has a good point, there are two ways to solve it. Either make the hinting consistent with the gesture or make the gesture consistent with the hinting.
Actually in this particular case I would like to have the gesture consistent with the arrows, not the other way. The purpose of the lock screen is to protect the user from accidentally unlocking the phone, so the less gestures are allowed the better. My pocket is perfectly able to do a simple flick on the screen, but not a swipe from outside of it.
ScumCoder ( 2015-09-28 19:13:03 +0200 )editGood point! The clock coming in from the top suggests vertical space. However, it is also in my case at least, a question of getting used to the new setup.
