[UPDATE 2016-01-30] Tablet Solution
Jolla has presented their answer for the TabletGate. Case closed. In my opinion, the answer "accept community made patches upstream" is now the best idea for securing a successful future for Jolla.
[UPDATE 2015-12-18] Jolla is back in business!
Congratulations! The correct answer has obviously been to be successful in negotiations and to cut costs. But as the author of this post I will take the freedom to accept answers as I see appropriate from now on. There have been some very good suggestions here and Jolla management would be wise to study them in detail.
But for the moment, let us celebrate that this bug has been fixed :-)

If you agree that Jolla and Sailfish OS must live on, please vote this up!

Help making this the top issue to send out a clear message that we do not want the Jolla ship to go down without a fight. (Show a great heart and give your vote even if you do not like everything that follows. BTW, this is a community wiki, your votes do not increase my karma.)

Contribute your ideas what Jolla should do now as answers (how to raise money, what business strategies to pursue, what mistakes to correct, etc.). One idea only per answer. Do not duplicate existing answers, vote for them. Use comments (not answers) for discussions and criticism.

Interesting background information:

[UPDATE 2015-12-15] Rowing the boat frantically: It looks positive, and a solution is possible already in the next few days. Sailfish OS 2.0.1, is coming up soon.
http://reviewjolla.blogspot.ch/2015/12/news-update-debts-on-hold-at-jolla.html

Jolla is now fighting for its survival. The key thing in this fight is that we succeed in our December financing round. If we do so, also the Tablet project can be resolved.
https://blog.jolla.com/open-letter-jolla-community/

I believe that through this program Jolla can turn its business to be profitable in the future.
http://reviewjolla.blogspot.ch/2015/11/news-jolla-financial-trouble-debt.html

As a Jolla employee -who is still an employee- despite the layoff notice, I can tell you that there is still hope in the company surviving.
http://reviewjolla.blogspot.ch/2015/11/its-not-delays-its-that-world-is-slow.html

Jolla is hopeful that it can raise additional funding in December.

[UPDATE 2015-11-30, some valid points to consider] Issue #2: Why Jolla deserved to fail (opinion)https://together.jolla.com/question/123511/issue-2-why-jolla-deserved-to-fail-opinion/

Nokia rumored to bring out a new smartphone with Android and Windows:
http://www.pressexaminer.com/nokia-c1-rumors-legends-return/79170
How about Sailfish as a 3rd option?

Nokia Launches $16.6 Billion Offer for Alcatel-Lucent
http://www.wsj.com/articles/nokia-launches-16-6-billion-offer-for-alcatel-lucent-1447845588
Nokia seems to have money to spend. It would be nothing but fair if they would correct their mistake and help out Jolla now!

Why you should vote for this issue:

Jolla disappearing from the surface of earth is the most serious possible bug, isn't it? So this issue rightfully deserves more votes than even the notorious "Downloadable map-data and offline turn by turn navigation in Maps".

Look around and understand that there is NO shortage of money on this planet. It just happens that a lot of money flows to stupid or outright destructive purposes. Random examples:

The list is endless and you can certainly agree with me that the money invested in Jolla has produced much better results than many other "investments". Well, maybe except for the first point in the list... Messi is cool :-)

We really had enough bullshit on this planet and it is about time something good happened. Jolla surviving would be a nice start.
In our minds, let us all disagree with the gloom and doom for Jolla and instead envision a bright future where a user-friendly and mature Sailfish OS will give Google and Apple a run for their money and make Microsoft turn green with envy. The biggest battles are fought on a mental level. May the force be with Jolla :-)

Why am I writing this?

This week I happened to wear my Jolla T-shirt ("I am the first one") that I got for placing an early order.
I felt nostalgic and remembered how hopeful I was for this device, how much I enjoyed each update and how I grew to like this phone with all the faults it surely still has.
I remembered the many hours wasted away for rooting my Android devices just so I could use them reasonably. And I shuddered at the thought of having to return to this tedious route.
I remembered how much I read and learned about Windows Phone, iOs, Ubuntu phone, Firefox OS, Bada, Plasma Mobile, Tizen and BlackBerry OS 10.
All of these operating systems have serious drawbacks and even with its current weaknesses Saifish OS always came out on top as the best OS for my personal requirements.
So I decided that Jolla and Sailfish OS have to survive. And I hope you agree with me.

Nokia buying Jolla is my biggest dream at the moment. Because Sailfish is the only one for me and that with Nokias hardware would be supercool.

A year ago, I looked around for alternative OS for Smartphone. At that time there were 3 alternatives, Unbuntu Phone, Sailfish and Firefox OS.

All 3 were different but they had 2 things common. 1. They are different from the 3 major (Android, IOS, Windows) 2.You only could buy them online.

In the recent months Unbuntu and Firefox OS changed their selling strategy. You will find them now in electronic markets and at phone providers. Jolla or Sailfish unfortunately not.

I think there are a lot of people who are interested in alternative OS. But only a few of them are looking intensively on the internet for that. Even less of them would buy such a alternative system online, especially when it only can be ordered from a foreign country. That's the feedback that i got from my friends an colleagues. Therefore Jolla and Sailfish are only for technical freaks ;-) or people who absolutely want to have this alternative system.

I think more people would be interested in and would buy a Jolla phone if Jolla (or phones with Sailfish OS) are sold in electronic markets or at phone providers. Maybe on different Hardware or like the Unbuntu phone on Hardware where you can decide at the start up, if you want to install android or unbuntu.

Certainly Jolla should go to the electronic markets or phone providers. But we useres can also do something. We also can go to the electric markets or our phone provider and ask there for sailfish OS or Jolla. Maybe If enough of us do this, they will be willing to build a business relationship with Jolla?

I don't want to encourage spamming. But why should we not try to help Jolla with this?

Offer some Other Half with additional functionality!

My last phone before the Jolla was a N900. I hesitated buying a Jolla because it is missing some hardware that I had before. The possibility that I might extend the hardware with an Other Half in future was the reason that I finally did choose to buy a Jolla phone. I was a bit disappointed when TOHs in the Jolla shop were essentially just more colours. Instead they announced they would be developing a tablet ... I didn't want a tablet, I wanted to extend my phone!

I won't list the hardware or feature that you could or should include ... it's all out there. I know the development would, in the short term, cost money instead of creating some. So, what Jolla could do right now IMO:

  • Start a crowdfunding project for some functionality-extending extending TOH
  • Find a promising third party TOH project that is near or fully finished. Contact the developers and collaborate to sell these TOH in the jolla shop
  • A combination of those two points.

I would instantly buy a TOH that adds some functionality to the phone I have and at the same time helps Jolla to survive. I bet, many more would as well.

i don't think TOHs genarate enough money on a mass market and that is what jolla needs.

Yeah, it would be nice for us nerds and geeks but it wouldn't help to save the company

In the beginning I thought, TOHs were an interesting concept, but possibly were just a nice marketing gag. Now I know, that it was nothing more - unfortunately. But there would have been some potential there!

stephan ( 2015-11-30 00:35:29 +0300 )edit

And why don't they make like Gold TOH? Overpriced and exclusive order...

Amilcar Santos ( 2015-12-02 00:42:15 +0300 )edit

TOHs will not save Jolla :(

Hardware is not what Jolla should focus on!

Stephan ( 2015-12-02 19:01:09 +0300 )edit

Indeed, but Jolla still doesn't has a 'Get Out Of Bankruptcy' card... a new TOH won't (hoping) require a year of development..

Jolla management and community action:

Lobby governments with an aim to get the Jolla Tablet to be chosen as an official tool for education in schools. In Finland the subject (hardware in primary school) is being debated currently.

Double down as a software vendor. Partner with FairPhone to deliver a "FairPhone Sailfish" as an alternative flavour to their "FairPhone Android" (for now known just as FairPhone).

Contact these people or companies. Make a nice presentation to them. I swear Jolla will get funding and huge market in India and China (BRICS) .

  • Ratan Tata /Cyrus Mistry /Tata Group (Biggest Indian business conglomerate. The company which turned around Jaguar Land Rover)
  • Mukesh Ambani / Reliance Industries (This company is building 4G network and related ecosystem from scratch).
    • Xiaomi.
    • Nokia

Ambience Gallery

Another idea I had was simply attach an 'Ambiance Gallery' onto the Jolla store.

  1. People pay Jolla a small fee and submit a nice Ambience they've created. It's checked by Jolla
  2. Once found not be be malicious or inappropriate it can then be sold for a small sum via the Jolla store
  3. The Author of the Ambience receives most of the sale sum, but Jolla get a cut

This could lead to many nice Ambiances on phones and tablets, community people more engaged and Jolla drawing some revenue.

Jolla testing team action:

Automatically approve submitted applications in Jolla Harbour (Excluding new apps). The rpm validator is already automatically checked OK when application is sent to QA in the Jolla Harbour web interface. What harm could it do now? This would be also a motivation for all app developers to continue working on their apps.

Andy Rubin to the rescue!

I want Andy to be the knight in shiny armor who saves Jolla. Cash, know-how, looks. He has got it all. And he could fix any Android emulation problems, I guess :-)

UPDATE, better link here:
People in the mobile industry say Mr. Rubin has tried to recruit personnel to help build a new phone company, likely through Playground Fund, his vehicle for investing in startups. Playground has raised about $300 million.

(This is a bit old)
Mr. Rubin is starting an incubator for startups interested in building technology hardware products.
