I'm raising this again as 2 years passed from last duplicate, maybe something changed.

Installed latest Skype from "jolla" Aptoide store. It crashes 9 times out of 10. But it's working sometimes.

SOLUTION: Give android apps access to contacts.

Here the output from journalctl -f

DatabaseUtils: Writing exception to parcel
DatabaseUtils: java.lang.NullPointerException
DatabaseUtils: at android.database.AbstractCursor.getColumnIndex(AbstractCursor.java:284)
DatabaseUtils: at com.android.providers.contacts.ContactsProvider2.addSnippetExtrasToCursor(ContactsProvider2.java:4880)
DatabaseUtils: at com.android.providers.contacts.ContactsProvider2.query(ContactsProvider2.java:4818)
DatabaseUtils: at android.content.ContentProvider$Transport.query(ContentProvider.java:189)
DatabaseUtils: at android.content.ContentProviderNative.onTransact(ContentProviderNative.java:113)
DatabaseUtils: at android.os.Binder.execTransact(Binder.java:367)
DatabaseUtils: at dalvik.system.NativeStart.run(Native Method)

Maybe that will ring any bells for someone. I'll gladly dig in deeper if you'd point me to the right direction.

P.S. WhatApps behaves almost like this. Instead of crashing it never allows me to register.

For what it's worth: I installed Skype from Google Play Store (I think) nearly two years ao, and I don't recall it ever crashing up to date. I understand that not everyone wants to install Play Store on Jolla, but trying some other source than Aptoide might help.

As for WhatsApp, I gave up a long time ago. There used to be a native app (MitäKuuluu), then it went bad, then it came up again, and then it stopped working again, and then the Android app worked for a while and then stopped working (or letting you to register), started working again, stopped working again, and then I decided I'm not putting any more effort into this. There are plenty of topics on WhatsApp out there. Aparently it does work for at least some people out there at the moment, but it's basically known to be a mess.

Have you given Skype the rights to access your contacts? Usually giving the rights solve these kinds of problems.

Brilliant, what can I say. I enabled "Allow apps to access contacts", restarted Dalvik and Skype worked like charm even with Video call.

WDYT, shall I report this a bug? Or it's a feature called "crash all Android apps trying to access contacts"?

@Vermut you're welcome :) I don't use android support, but problems like these have popped out regularly after 1.1.7 which blocked access to contacts by default. Also, the word Contact appears many times in the journal you posted. Basic detective work :)

@chemist Still a bug in my book. A proper implementation of this feature would present an empty address book to the android apps, not mindlessly crash them when they try to access it.

@Federico sorry for the sarcasm... it is of course a known bug ;)
