Turing Phone is switching the OS that it runs on. It was originally running on Android Lollipop, but now according to the site, it’s now running on Sailfish OS. Turing has said that while they are using Sailfish OS, the device will still be capable of running Android apps. Still a pretty important feature considering the sheer number of apps in the Google Play Store or Amazon App Store, in comparison to Sailfish OS. Sailfish OS is an operating system that is based off of Linux – which that should tell you why it can run Android apps. The UI for Sailfish OS is provided by Jolla, but the Turing Phone likely won’t use that UI overlay as they have their own that they want to use, especially considering the fact that this is supposed to be an unhackable smartphone.

Turing has stated that Sailfish OS is running perfectly fine on the Turing Phone, and that the company is currently working on its final testing of the software on the smartphone. With Sailfish OS, while it is Linux-based and open sourced, the app that is used to run Android apps is provided by Jolla and thus is not open source. It’s unclear whether Turing is a partner with Jolla or not, but we’ll have to wait and see what happens there. It appears that April is the target date now, and we also have a new operating system for the Turing Phone.
