I think it could be interesting to decline a phone call and easily respond with a text message (SMS for instance). I don't know if it is possible to optionally avoid the voicemail redirection...

Few examples:

  • "I will call you back on few minutes"
  • "Sorry I'm driving"
  • ...

And of course user defined messages should be the top (thanks @szobi for your comment).

Edit: it seems to be already implemented on Android: http://howto.cnet.com/8301-11310_39-57352293-285/how-to-decline-a-phone-call-with-a-custom-text-message-on-ics/ and in BalckBerry 10 and iPhone (>= 4). I don't know for the other OS...

A manually predefined message for this would be great! :)

@simo What's the advantage converting my comment to an answer? For me, it is more an enhancement on TeHeRs great question/suggestion than an answer. Comments can be upvoted, too. But there is only one upvote for my comment till now. So, it is not very popular compared to 41 upvotes for the question.

A possible implementation we expect:

  • User can define (create/edit/delete) several answers in Settings -> Apps -> Phone app
  • Some answers/examples should be already there:
    • "I'll call you right back."
    • "I'll call you later."
    • "Can't talk now. Call me later?"
    • "Sorry, I'm driving."
    • "I'm in a meeting. I'll call you back."
    • ...
  • When a phone call is arriving there is an option in the bottom pulley menu "Reject with predefined SMS" which rejects the call and opens a list where you can select one of the predefined SMS. The selected SMS is sent to the caller.
  • If there is only one predefined SMS, it should be sent to the caller without opening the list of predefined SMS, when the option "Reject with predefined SMS" in the bottom pulley menu is selected.
  • Furthermore it should be possible to specialize the list of predefined SMS in ambience settings. The list of predefined SMS from ambience settings shall replace the list of predefined SMS from general settings. If you not predefine SMS in ambience settings, the predefined SMS from general settings shall be used. Thus, you can have ambiences with for example only one predefined SMS and no need of choosing SMS from list when selecting "Reject with predefined SMS" in the bottom pulley menu, while you have a list of some common predefined SMS in all other ambiences. (thanks to @lenggi for that idea)

Do not hesitate to to post any criticism or idea for improvement. So, I can include it in this answer.

Fits the bill perfectly in my opinion.

I would like to see this as part of an ambience. I choose the ambience and got stuff sorted out like notifications, accounts sync, presence etc. Having phone calls answered with an SMS would just be one more to the list.

@lenggi Great idea! I will include in my answer that there should be a possibility to specialize predefined SMS in ambience settings.

What do you think is more useful, specialization of predefined SMS in ambience settings should add predefined SMS to the general predefined SMS or should replace the general predefined SMS?

To my mind, replacing general predefined SMS is more useful, since you can specialize with a single predefined SMS, e.g. in an ambience you only use in meetings.

@lenggi: This question should have your interest: ability to control connection settings via Ambiences

TeHeR ( 2014-02-12 01:21:05 +0300 )edit

In addition to list of predefined messages i'd add the option to answer with manually written SMS. Sometimes quite useful, you can't predict all possible answers in every situation. Such option is in WP8, in N9 you may edit SMS before sent it.

It looks like from the strings appeared in the 3.1.0 translations that this feature is going to be implemented \o/:

It seem it didn't make it into 3.1.0. At least I couldn't find an option to define that SMS.

Actually it is implemented. But the text is not configurable. So the new question should be: can we change those messages?

I think not, at least from the translations it seems that the predefined texts are "hardcoded".

martonmiklos ( 2019-08-20 22:59:19 +0300 )edit

@naytsyrhc could you explain how to activate that feature? If I deline a call there's no such option and the caller doesn't receive a message.

@martonmiklos as I said, not configurable but it made it in the 3.1.0 release. it's in the Release Notes: https://together.jolla.com/question/208530/release-notes-310-seitseminen/#208530-phone "Incoming call dialog now allows replying to the caller easily with predefined quick messages (ability to customise quick messages is coming in the next release)" and in Changelog: https://together.jolla.com/question/208531/changelog-310-seitseminen/#208531-voicecall-ui-jolla "[voicecall] Use persistent answer/reject hints." @jollajo I did not do anything special. I just found the possibility to decline call with sms yesterday for the first time. I tried to reproduce the steps by calling myself, but the dialog doesn't seem to come up always. Either this is a bug or a feature for just showing "SMS"-option if caller calls from mobile phone? Can't tell for sure yet.

I just found out that this cool feature is implemented; I can reject the call with a SMS message to the caller.

After using that I spent some time searching the way to configure the message but now found in this thread that the messages are hardcoded.

There is a problem with this hardcoding; seems the language of the reject message is selected by the default language of the device; as mine is Finnish it only allows me to send the messages in Finnish. However many of my colleagues are non-natives and the official company language is English... :(

Wait for next release. It's in the release notes of 3.1.0 that configuration will be part of next (or one of the next) release(s).

If you are willing to twiddle the scripts a bit, then yes.

The message comes from qml file /usr/share/voicecall-ui-jolla/pages/calling/InCallView.qml where the hard-coded messages have been defined as a translation strings,

qsTrId("voicecall-me-please_call_later")
qsTrId("voicecall-me-cant_talk_at_the_moment")
qsTrId("voicecall-me-will_call_back")

If you change those listentries to some regular textstrings you'd like to use instead, then that's what you will get as SMS messages.

Thank you for providing the location. It's a shame you can't change this by settings 'gui'

I changed it in translations using lconvert ;)
