After having the Android support running for a while, it becomes impossible to adjust the ringtone volume by hitting the volume buttons anymore, you can only directly adjust it from the Settings, or by changing to a different ambience which has a different default ringtone volume. Stopping the Android support immediately solves this problem.

I think it's reproducible if you use an Android application like Memrise or Duolingo, which produces lots of short separate sounds. Use it (actively) for some 15-20 minutes, then try changing the volume from the home screen (which should normally cause the ringtone volume to change), and you will see it's actually the media volume being changed right now.

It also seems that pulseaudio eats up more and more CPU the longer these (kinds of?) applications are in use, so maybe there is something going on here causing both those problems.
