Separate earphone & speaker-phone sound in Android apps (VoIP, Skype etc...) [released]

It seems that Android VOIP apps (several SIP apps, Skype etc.) can't differentiate between earphone speaker and loudspeaker.

During a call I can hear the voice on both speakers and switching between them (via app UI) doesn't work. Volume regulation also affects both speakers simultaneously. Consequently it can happen, that the person I call can hear her/himself on their phone - and of course people around me can hear the other person talking. Earphones (with integrated microphone) help out at the moment.

It can also be observed that proximity sensor doesn't work with Android applications during a call. This means phone screen doesn't turn off and your ear/face can accidentally press a virtual button on touch screen. A solution is to press power button shortly to put phone manually into standby mode (call shouldn't stop).

Feature-Requests to Jolla/Myriad:

  • Allow Android apps to differentiate between earpiece speaker and regular speaker
    [Released with 1.1.1.27]
  • Activate proximity sensor in Android apps
[seems to be working (tested with Android sensor tools), if doesn't it's maybe an app-specific problem]

With the so far missing SIP/VoIP integration on Sailfish OS (and therefore being dependant on Android solutions), this in an important and missing feature for those who have to use the phone for voice calls over internet.

I have problem with the sound only comes from the loudspeaker at the bottom of the phone when using Skype. Whatever I do and no matter which version (tried downloaded both from Yandex and Play Store, and update) I use, it's the same. So I have to use earphone if I don't want the whole room to hear.

It should be possible to setup the audio at the linux level and tell the system what output should be used for what source? I have a mixer like this on my KDE.

Any news? It is quite annoying when you want to do a fast call and you don't have earspeakers around...

No news yet about it. Idk if it's Jolla or Myriad which can do something about that. I hope to get more votes on that topic since there must be more people who use VoIP calls on a daily basis...! Taking out earspeakers all the time (and always have to think of bringing them along) is not a great solution at the moment... But at least it is possible this way :-)

Today's december Jolla-update seems to solve that issue. Just got a Skype call and didn't need my headphones. Amazing! Proximity sensor doesn't work yet (at least with Skype) but even on Android it's unreliable. Solution: Simply press the standby button once you pick up a call.

I'd be happy if others can test their VoIP apps as well & maybe we can close this question. Thanks Jolla, unfortunately I have to use such apps a lot and this fix makes using Jolla much easier :-)

[UPDATE] I close the topic since request(s) seem to be implemented (since Software version 1.1.1.27, Vaarainjärvi) and working. Please read updated request-text above. Thanks everyone for testing and voting!

I confirm that after update 1.1.1.26 for the first time I was able to make a call and hear the voice on the other end only on the earphone speaker (before both earphone speaker and loudspeaker was heard together). I use an android VOIP app called "Jumblo".

@User: I mean the Jolla update. Standby-button = physical button next to volume buttons (the one you can also turn your phone off). By using it you turn off the screen and don't accidentally press virtual buttons with your ear.

I am able to hear the skype sound through the earpiece, but switching to the speaker (on the bottom of the jolla) doesn't seem to work

It is working for me now when using the MobileVOIP application.

I propose to close the issue.
