Congratulation for your new financing,

that's great. That will be really needed. :-)

Is it conceivable that Jolla would propose some further services on Jolla(partner)/own server?
to bound to sfos devices like mail calendars and don't know what else for a great augmented experience...

Same as google or others do, but trusted or without ads, against a small contribution. That could pump the incoming cash from jolla a little bit more...

With it is not meant a whole hardware solution, but Server-side Software solutions to sell, or financed through maintenance contracts. One case would be in partnership with a server-renting firm, where jolla server-side Software are placed on their servers.
Other case would be, we as user, we may install these Software by our own on a VPS server of our choice.
And every time we need help or support from jolla, it will be in form of contribution as return...

I think today, softwares may be obsolete if the background services don't work.
Applications would be a gate to the service, and may be free (should be free), but the service not really.
that would bring more flexibility on what type of service would provided.
And user may still use his own one

That would be a complement for having a more robust self financing strategy.
Partner-space system is nice and quite interesting, but long to bring in place. And i ask me how well could we concentrate ourself on an os development, with short incoming and unstable financing...
Need more developers, and working on stable eco system.
An os without ecosystem is expose to a slow death...

Cheers

PS: i think there are many sfos sailors who still navigate with google services in background.
Then proposing same services, or server-side-tools or comparable would be fine for some of them...

Well, I don't understand the business strategy "Go! Jolla go!".

About the other "business strategy": I don't think there is a business case for Jolla to become a service provider for email. They should focus on SFOS development.

I bought my jolla because I believe in decentralization. Instead of having all my sensitive data at a single provider, I rather have a OS vendor that implements standards (such as CalDAV), so I can choose my own provider (or be my own provider).

@sigma_ yes indeed, that's why i used "propose". that would be an alternative to google. it is not thoiught just for your need. if you're not interested, then it is ok. don't use it. What i meant with it is to have the possibility to increase the functionalities with own solutions, but not as default. Do you understand what i mean?

@Stefanix :-D is not a business strategy but a short greeting/reaction about their shortly announced financing, which is a signal revival on activities.
And about business activity, don't forget that their motivation is to present a system which care of privacy. What is a system as os which bound itself on a plateform who don't care of it like google? for it is obsolete. if jolla want guaranty the privacy, it should do it from A to Z. But not ignore google anyway.
Don't forget that they need cash. The partner space is a nice business strategy, but bring nothing as long as it is not installed.
Mails, cloud services, calendar, contact. don't which parts of services could be given. there is enough other professional solution, that could propose such kind of firm. And not especially on their servers

i dont think jolla should host these services themselves but i definately think they should cooperate with other trustworthy and reputable service providers like "posteo". the cooperation should be so that a flawless setup of your posteo account in garanteed. any changes are communicated beforehand so that theres never a problem. of course not only posteo - im sure there are a couple more "good" companies surrounding the CCC or the EFF and so on...

I don't think that Jolla is in a position to offer services. Imho it's best if they focus on developing SailfishOS.

For mail calendar there is already the very good Fastmail service (which works ~well with Jolla phones). It's more than unlikely that people would switch to a Jolla-developed mail calendar service. Especially considering that Jolla was in all those year not able to provide really great email/calendar apps (they are nice but not great).

More general regarding services: there is sandstorm.io which looks very promising. Maybe one day this personal private cloud might become a readymade, read: mature and easy-to-use alternative to the centralized Google-, Apple-, Microsoft-Services and work well with Jolla (SailfishOS) phones.

It seems that You didn't understand me.
And Imho it would be better if they concentrate on having strong business system.
How could they concentrate themselves just by tinkering on an OS? really, with stable financing and incoming it's possible.
how could a firm get more incoming? could you answer on it?
What are you suggestions? just concentrating on a os which has no incoming environment currently installed. you're great.
Furthermore, What is the motivation of jolla? to offer a solution which take care more of the privacy.
Then have an os who do this is fine, but obsolet if someone (not you especially) use then google services. A lots of people are not skilled like you and me, or have no time to find and organize an alternative to google-like services.
And as i told, it would be a service to be proposed. concurrent from sandstorm or everything else, whatever. and? what is the problem?
The current problem is put the head over the water and a better financial position for the good of all. And offer to people serious solution which is done from jolla from a to z, controlled from user himself, If he want.
Idea is not "hey you get my phone and all the stuffs", but "hey you have the phone, and if you want you get more, and with contribution you get something more powerful".
Thanks anyway for having take time to read the thread, and answered to it (even if the opinion are opposed).

@cemoi71 The problem with what you suggest is that they do not have resources to do so. The core offering, the OS, is still having many problems ans there is long list of waited feature request. If Jolla wont show they can maintain and deliver in their core solution - no other service will matter, and people will stop using it altogether. ALL thdir resources should focus on having a better OS. Anything else would.be spreading resources on something that other companies are already doing.

abanai ( 2016-05-05 09:08:53 +0300 )edit

@cemoi71 tinkering with the os doesn't bring in money - a working ecosystem with payed apps for SailfishOS does!

shining ( 2016-05-05 13:03:49 +0300 )edit

@abanai good point, but now they have a bit cash more, for more ressources. they may need some even more for this. or get with a strategic partnership.

cemoi71 ( 2016-05-05 13:57:48 +0300 )edit

@shining yes i think the same too, just currently it bring nothing. maybe later with the partnerspace. paid app is the best, but maybe not in jolla philosophy (and mine too), but app wich propose some services, why not...
