It happened to me also. I decided to reinstall whatsapp because it started crashing. After removing and installing it again I get that "Unable to connect" message.

I have uninstalled Android Support, then did this in terminal:
rm -rf /data/dalvik-cache/* as seen here: https://openrepos.net/content/schturman/dalvik-cleanup-u-20010-only and installed Android Support again. Then Whatsapp started.

Note: Removing cache may have been unnecessary, so I'd try just uninstalling and reinstalling Android Support first.

This also did the trick for me.

Reinstalling WhatsApp and Android Support couple times, worked for me too.

Reinstalling Whatsapp and stopping/starting Android support did it for me. I also enabled contact access and background services for Whatsapp.

This didn't work for me, I'm still getting this error with the latest version directly downloaded from whatsapp.com

But I also didn't enable contacts access for Android apps as I don't want WhatsApp to upload all my contacts. Signal works fine without contacts acces, so why doesn't whatsapp?

On a Jolla 1 with 3.0.2 I needed to active Contacts access (In Settings > Android support) to initialize Whatsapp.
