With 2 phones confirmed to have licensed the Sailfish OS (Intex and Turing. I don't know if I missed any) and other community ports in discussion (Fairphone), how will the support and updates for the OS work in the future? Until now, all updates catered to the hardware of 1 phone only (the original phone), but going forward it wll need to cater to a variety of hardware. This raises a few questions in my mind:

  • Will updates be simultaneously available? i.e to all phones licensed to run Sailfish. Will it hit the original phone 1st and then the other phones
  • If a user has an issue, but its not clear whether its software related or hardware, who do they contact - Jolla or the hardware vendor. Will Jolla provide support in these cases?
  • How can we submit bug reports and record bug reports that may be specific to a phone / hardware
  • Will there be multiple branches of the OS, catering to specific hardware specifications?
  • Will beta versions of the OS be available for all phones like it is available for the original Jolla so that it is easier to iron out the bugs?

These are what spring to my mind. Others may have more. I am sorry if this question has been asked before. I tried to search, but could not find.

Do all the computers running a specific Linux distribution receive updates at the same time?

  1. All Sailfish devices at the same time, even the community ported ones, if they have OTA updates enabled.

  2. Very much depends on the issue. Vendor should be contacted first IMO.

  3. Use the appropriate post tags.

  4. No no, nononono no.

  5. See number 1.

About 4: Turing has their hard-to-pronounce UI, but I suppose the platform updates are independent from it, like DEs on desktop Linux.

BTW, for example the Tablet has received updates at the same time as the phone (well, Taalojärvi was released earlier, as it doesn't have mobile phone capacities.)
