[Jolla C] is protective screen cover replacable?

Jolla C comes with a preinstalled protective plastic screen cover, that is unfortunately easily scratched. I had mine once in the same pocket with metal keys, and now the screen cover is full of scraches, that are visible even when the display is on.

Is it possible to replace the screen cover by the user or by Jolla customer service?

Note: According to an email sent to Community Device Program members "The protective cover over the display is meant to be kept on to protect the display, so please do not take it off when you receive the device."

I wonder what's up with the screen? Why does it come with protective plastic screen cover installed beforehand? Pure screen glass isnt strong enough?

What is wrong with the screen, that you need a plastic cover for it and Jolla recommends not to take it off? I use my original Jolla (The first one) without plastic cover from the very beginning as daily phone and the screen has not one single scratch. Is the screen of JollaC of lower quality than JollaOne?

All phones I purchased in the latest two years come with such a protection.

@Giacomo_Di_Giacomo: thats a different one. the ones "pre-installed" are just some adhesive foils to prevent scratches during packing, the ones for daily use are harder, sometimes even gorilla glass.

While we wait for a proper protection to be available, it looks like the Sony Xperia M2 Aqua has the same size (and the same name... oops) as the Jolla C. Anybody can check if its screen protectors fit the C?

I doupt the glass would be same size even if the device or the display dimensions were the same. And even if we were that lucky, you still need to have holes where you have the phone speaker, proximity censor and preferably also front camera.

There are Screenprotectors for Jolla C available at Amazon (Germany) by a manufacturer or seller called "@folix". Maybe also available in other countries or webstores.

Right, look for Jolla C Displayschutz.

I tried the atFolix but it was bulky and is making a kind of "ridge" on the right and left side. This make you feel the screen protective when using left & right side gesture... After 2 months I decided to go for Brotec (the mate one here: http://www.protectionfilms24.com/article/2x-brotect-matte-screen-protector-jolla-jolla-c-1930218.html). It is smaller than the atFolix but the feeling is much more better!

well its dev device with no warranty so, your best bet is propably getting a cover ment for intex aqua fish, if they happen to sell em somewhere.

anyway i dont really see the need for a cover in normal, or dev use. If it is ued in harsh conditions with muddy fingers and stuff, then ofc.

It is interesting what is meant by "no warranty". I purchased the device inside EU, therefore it must have a two year warranty by law. Additionally, I actually read through the terms of purchase for this device and nothing was stated there about lack of warranty. Ofc, the lack of warranty in this context might mean that replacement parts such as screen covers and batteries might not be available for customer purchase. If the screen cover is scrached by the keys in my pocket, it is outside the scope of the two year warranty quaranteed by law anyway.

hmm, but is it even sold as a consumer hw product. Its more of a membership to a dev support program that comes with a complimentary device.

@J24 Sorry, but you didn't purchase any device at all. You paid a fee for participating in the Sailfish Community Device Program, which just happens to come with a limited edition Jolla C device and more goodies.

About the screen cover, there's a lot of custom covers to buy, which can be easily adapted to Jolla C with a simple pair of scissors or a razor blade knife.

@Whippler@eson I doupt that would be a valid argument in Cosumer Protection Board, but I'm no lawyer. Anyway I would like to know how the cover is attached before trying to remove it. Especially as the only offical note was not to remove it upon receiving the device.

J24 ( 2016-06-29 11:37:37 +0200 )edit

@J24 that would, in fact, be the absolutely accurate and valid argument to close the case.

@eson, you should post that as an answer so we can upvote. Additional related questions, like the one asked by @k0stek on the other hand should posted as comments. Just to keep the site clean and easy to browse, thanks.

The Jolla C display glass is (most likely) not hardened as Gorilla Glass, etc. However it will still perfectly work without the screen protector. I took off mine the same day the phone arrived. It's very cheap plastic and has no scratch resistance whatsoever.

Until now, the display even without the protector is perfectly clean without any visible scratches. However I use to carry my phone inside a leather case, so you may wish to consider something similar if you are concerned about display scratches.

In my opinion there is absolutely no use in keeping the original screen protector on unless you toss around your phone a lot or wear it inside your pocket with keys and stuff.
