Jolla C Compatible Screen Protector [answered]

Jolla C comes with a plastic protector which is not meant to be removed: "Important note: The protective cover over the display is meant to be kept on to protect the display, so please do not take it off when you receive the device."

Is the protector just a thin plastic foil that protects the screen from scratches or something sturdier? I was thinking about removing the plastic foil and replacing it with a tempered glass screen protector. There are lots of options in the 5" range, but what phone model would be the closest one?

There are "open ended" options where speaker/sensors openings would not matter that much: image description

Do we have the dimensions of the glass? Is there any drawings available or do we have to measure? I don't have the Jolla C yet, so can someone measure the glass dimensions and camera/als/speaker locations?

Tempered glass screen protectors are fairly cheap, so buying couple would not really matter, but it would help ruling out some options...

Feel free to give suggestions :)

Now as we hold the Jolla C in our hands, I think the applied screen protector is nothing I want to keep. It fits well, but there are bubbles at the edges and it seems to attract fingerprints much more than the glass surface of the Jolla 1.

We've been talking about this on talk.maemo.org and it appears there's a crowd in Germany willing to custom make us some screen protectors if someone sends them a Jolla C for measurement.

They already have supported us with Jolla Phone and Jolla Tablet protectors in the past.

I use that company for all my screen protectors. Good value for money and they are quick to send package, which is nice. (I know them as protectionfilms.de)

Thanks for the info @r0kk3rz If there's a custom glass for Jolla C I would definitely buy one.

I use that company too. I was able to send custom dimension (yes, without cut for speaker and camera but...) and received my order.

I've removed the screen foil protection from the Jolla C, maybe I could contact them and send them this protection in order to them to make a compatible screen protection.

@Pornis, yeah that's the idea, get a custom cut 'brotect' tempered glass one cut with proper speaker/camera/prox cutouts.

Even having replacement plastic foils would be nice though for when they wear out.

If you're referring to the Schutzfolien protectors, they're horrible quality-wise when compared to those I've used to on Android phones, even when using the Insmat flip cover. They wear out (become scratched and opaque) very quickly, with the first marks already visible right after attaching the foil.

Mounted my Airglass protector from http://www.schutzfolien24.de yesterday. It feels like the glass from the previous Jolla 1, fingerprints are much less and visibility in sunlight is alright. Actually I would've preferred to have them a bit larger. Swiping from one side is very smooth, where the foil is close to the screen edge. on the other side there is a small gap and I feel the edge of the foil. It's not really a problem, it's just not perfect.

You would need to apply it centered ;) If the gap is only on one side, it will be much bigger than 0,5mmm up to 1 mm on the other. I have 0,5 gap on both edges and i only feel it if i scratch across with a fingernail, but can totally understand a bigger gap may be disturbing. Mine is not perfectly centered vertically, but that does not mater because the top and bottom bevel from screen to casing is higher than on the edges and it feels the same from bottom-up and top-down. EDIT; i actually measured and have 0,4 mm on both sides.

Finally got my Brotect Airglass. Good i ordered 2 since i'm not the best person to apply them. The "margin" is WAAAAY to big. I didn't realize how much 0.5mm really is, and it looks like it is slightly more than so as well. On the vertical axis it is definitely more, so much so that it looks off if I use the top for alignment (which is the only way i manage to get it aligned). Also the surface is really bad imo, so unless i'm missing a front side protective film used in shipping it is pretty much as bad as I remember the original film to be. :( EDIT: you meant 0.5mm on each side?

@Folix sells Jolla C protectors on local European Amazons.

//Edit from @Sailor They have a reworked version of the foils now. Which fits better and have no cutouts for the LED and lightsensor. http://www.atfolix.info/online-shops/ Pictures: https://imgur.com/a/dzQ5w

I ordered the @Folix FX-Hybrid Glass. We'll see if it's any good...

Pornis ( 2016-07-20 11:22:29 +0300 )edit

I just installed @Folix FX-Hybrid Glass screen protectors to my Jolla C and Jolla Tablet without any problems.

peltool ( 2016-07-31 01:08:10 +0300 )edit

I ordered an @folix FX hybrid glass. Fits snug to the edges creating slightly sharp edges sticking over the bezel. It has a cutout for the led which is slightly odd. Feels much better than the original one that came with the C, not too far from my slightly worn First One J1. (Probably trying Brotect next time, but I'm happy with this one)

@attah, thanks for your report on folix! The Bedifol are a bit smaller than the screen so application should be more convenient. I am glad we sent data -0,5mm to bedifol after reading about folix :D

I've ordered one to see if it fix perfectly. I'll let you know.

According to Sepehr, it is okay to replace the screen protector that comes with the package: https://twitter.com/JamesNoori/status/753941291411578880
