I posted a reddit thread about why I can't use Jolla as my daily driver and I got a negative response, imho my points on my 3 reasons I can't use the Jolla handset blog post are valid.

Maybe Reddit is the wrong place to have a constructive conversation about Jolla? I came to Jolla for the community and freedom and it instantly got thrown back in my face. I'm not saying Reddit is a good representative portion of the Jolla community but I'm not happy with the lack constructive feedback I got on there..

Anyway does anyone want to have a constructive conversation about my criticisms are am I wrong as a user for y'know, needing to use my device the way I want to use it?

Thousands of e-mails per day? Are you sure you want to handle them via a phone? Is not something with a physical keyboard and big screen a better work horse?

NFC: Jolla is still in development. When you write NFC applications, you simply have to wait until this has been properly implemented.

It was to be expected, that Jolla would not get a fully developed completely new handset and completely new firmware rolled out within the time frame they set themselves. As it is right now, there are a couple of restrictions that even withheld several people from putting Jolla into their productive environment. However, the main features are there and functioning (in general). And, it took me more than 24 h to get used to the UI (and I am still not fully are accustomed and I still hope for some improvements within the current design concept).

To answer your questions. I go between a desktop PC and phone.

Didn't you realize Jolla doesn't have buttons to click before to buy it? And, didn't you realize the major point of UI is "gesture based"? so, it's odd to me now you criticize the phone for these points... you simply bought the wrong phone for you.

Having this post properly titled after it's original blog/reddit post makes the topic clear at least...

Jolla clearly stated, that Sailfish OS would be indeed very gesture focused. I don't see this as a bad thing, it just takes a bit of getting used to, then it's as fast or even faster than buttons, at least in my experience.

The simple and right solution here is to introduce buttons aswell as swipe gestures like y’know, every other frigging phone.

It shouldn't be the goal of a new OS to be like every other OS on the marked, don't you think? I don't know if there was a misconception on your side regarding the gesture emphasis of Sailfish?

Despite the Jolla rocking an NFC chip for some reason you can’t get any NFC functionality

I think there is NFC functionality, since I saw comments in the IRC regarding the use of NFC to autoconnect to other devices, but I don't know for sure. I expect more of it in updates (and when tohd.service battery drain is fixed).

Why no button to SEND emails when composing?

Why do you need a button? When I compose a mail, I only need to activate the pulley menu and the first entry is Send ...

And yes at the moment there are temporary shortcomings as the OS is still in beta phase and probably will be for quite some time. I see it more as a device for enthusiasts and people who want a real Linux on their phone, than a device for consumers or business people, so in fact your review is right in its conclusion, thats it's not yet for consumers, but I don't see why it wouldn't be a device for developers, since the SDK is quite good and you can write native Linux code/reuse code from desktop applications.

All Fair balanced points. Do you find the pull down is quicker than a send button? For me a button is a path of least resistance and that's why it works so well when the functionality is frequently used.

Do you find that emails arrive instantly on your Jolla when you use Exchange?

JohnMcLear ( 2014-01-15 01:58:24 +0300 )edit

For me I see no difference, though a button might use extra space or would require to close the keyboard. If I had to close the keyboard first, it would be considerably slower than using the pulley. Regarding Exchange I can't give a review since I don't use it on the Jolla. Use IMAP on my own server.

netzvieh ( 2014-01-15 02:11:05 +0300 )edit

FYI you don't have to close the keyboard first on Android/WM/FFOS, that's why other platforms are quicker for my use case.

JohnMcLear ( 2014-01-15 15:32:30 +0300 )edit

I hate send buttons! It's too easy to accidentally send unfinished messages. On Android I always had "confirm before sending/deleting" enabled. Pulley menu for sending is a great feature for me.

@hana then send could behave the same as delete when you get a set amount of time to cancel sending...

@JohnMcLear: honestly, this post does not bring any value as such. The expectation is to have questions where issues are accurately described and broken down to a single one per post, allowing the answering part to properly happen. I'd recommend that you identify clearly which are the issues you, as a user, find the most annoying, make sure they are already reported here and vote up so we get an overall understanding of what needs to be improved. If you have ideas on how the device could be improved, with new software or hardware features, just proceed similarly, and cast a vote on what you think is good so we all share a common understanding.

Thanks for complying with the above guidelines!

Same here, basically useless discussion. Somebody jumping into the water (Jolla) and then complaining that its wet (gesture UX) should have stayed on dry land anyway.

Jörg ( 2014-01-15 15:27:29 +0300 )edit

So let me get this straight, user feedback should only be in the form of votes up/down? 1984 much?

Useless discussion that email client is not performing (not documented) and NFC functionality is non existent (Again not documented)?? Nice.. Classy Jolla, real classy..

JohnMcLear ( 2014-01-15 15:31:01 +0300 )edit

@Jorg your point would be valid if my beef was ONLY about the UX but if you bothered to read my post I cover other pitfalls that block daily usage. I also focus on one specific point in the UI that slows my workload which IMHO is a BFD for your users.

@JohnMcLear: The issues you refer to are already discussed here. Use the search, read the FAQ and help in order to get a grasp on how you can best contribute here, thank you.

@JohnMcLear: As a matter of fact I read your post. Talking again about the UX. Sailfish is a gesture based UX and it is different from any other frigging phone. Regarding NFC I can't say much, never have used it yet. Regarding e-mail I basically agree with you. I am using in parallel Android K@-mail, which is a pretty good replacement until the native e-mail client is mature. It can handle (in my case) 5 accounts with hundreds of e-mails. I have never tried sending/receiving thousands of emails though, because I wouldn't get any sleep probably ;-) I used the word "useless", since it seems that (some of) your requirements just do not match Jolla's features (yet). If you want to go offroad you need to buy a SUV and not a sports car and it would be "useless" discussing why and which of the features of the sports car do not match your requirements. However, it would be interesting to know which phone you currently use as your first phone.

Sorry to let you down but in Europe NFC is not that important yet... had it with N9 and apart of some hardware play I never used it or even could make use of it.

The heavily gesture based UI is one of the selling points to me. A hardware keyboard would be nice though. It takes some days to get used to the UI even coming from N9 and it is still some inconsistency there but which other device are you able to manage without looking on the screen the whole time. With every new device there is some change, here it is a new company with new OS, you will soon notice that you think oh a notification by looking on your phone sitting on a table and double tap swipe in one gesture to get to the notification screen... without the need to pull anything special, you could do it without looking at it when someone tells you your phone is blinking...

I have an android tablet and hate it for its navigation UI same for iOS... one or even three buttons to rule them all^^

edit: just read all related to your blog/reddit... What are you about? Not for devs? Not for consumers? My sister ordered one and is in love with it already. She is the geeky consumer type but still no developer nor linux-guru!

I am in Europe (UK) and NFC is extremely important so sorry but I disagree.

I don't massively object to any change in UI if it doesn't slow my ability to complete tasks, in this case it is slower to complete a task with the Jolla than other devices because it requires additional interaction.

RE your edit: Is there a question there chemist?

JohnMcLear ( 2014-01-15 03:46:26 +0300 )edit

Whatever suits you... I was in the UK about 5 months ago and I had apart of an airport information screen no use for NFC (what a QR code could have done as it was giving me an URL)... not in a taxi nor bus nor club nor bar nor anywhere... extremely subjective I guess!

chemist ( 2014-01-15 03:48:21 +0300 )edit

Yea, I use NFC everyday to unlock my phone, share data, yada yada.. http://nfcring.com very useful :)

JohnMcLear ( 2014-01-15 03:49:35 +0300 )edit

I must admit that I was a bit disappointed with the NFC thing too. I had already sticked NFC tags here and there before I got my Jolla and now they just sit there doing nothing. I'm planning to buy NFC speakers, headphones etc but no use for that yet. I've had some issues with J but I still love it.
