According to https://www.googlewatchblog.de/2016/12/entwickler-android-aufsatz-google/ Cyanogenmod will stop all services end of 2016. Though the code is online on github: does this have any influence to the community SFOS devices? As seen in the porting docs you should use a CM11 or CM12.x base to get it ported. What if these base images do not exist anymore (or are not developed for future devices)?

Commercial Cyanogen OS dead. CyanogenMod can't die as it's community opensource project :)

While it won't be funded by cyanogen inc., I think the community will carry on under a different name and support at least the most popular devices. The name was already announced, but I've forgotten it. Look it up on xda.

Maybe the Lineage people could help the Sailfish OS community create images for other phones? It seems that building on Sailfish OS is a safer bet than Android (at this time). Google isn't as open-source-friendly under the Alphabet umbrella, apparently.

Its sad that with Pebble OS and Cyanogenmod two great OSs have just bit the dust this year. Good news is that a new Debian Windows PC, and Mac Laptop friendly OS was born with Rasberrypi https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/installation/installing-images/mac.md
Now i can see that making itself onto a phone at some point. After all its a small device OS design for small screens initially at least.
