Please don't mess up the next device. [not relevant]

A plead : There are various "hints" around that Jolla might -notice the bolt- be introducing a new community device during 2017. These are rumors obviously but the need for officially supported HW running Sailfish is more than real.

So far the phone HW attempts have been flawed. J1 was a mediocre device, JC was a price point phone and none of them made Sailfish one hand UI/UX shine. As proven slapping an awesome OS on a whatever device won't make a great product in the same way that putting a Ferrari engine on a Lada 2130 won't make a great car.

I believe that more or less you are bound to your partners producing the HW but PLEASE make sure that they understand how SFOS works and its one handed nature in order to not have yet another Awesome OS/ Crap HW situation.

And don't try to design around a price point. It needs a really good and fast (to start and take pics) camera, it needs a lot of ram, a fast processor, a modem that will work globally, dual sims, water/weather proofness, a video out (really important), feel good in the hand -both material and size wise- and look desirable. SW you can fix. Crap HW is not going to be fixed by SW.

So please try to get it right this time around.

I can only highly agree. We need a top notch hardware phone and I think is time to switch to 64bit arch.

IF the "a new community device" is going to be a phone. There where other hints too (watch).

I disagree with you because it is the fact of how well it runs on a low-spec phone like the JollaC/AquaFish that illustrates the unparalleled efficiency/smoothness of SFOS. And umm.. video out ??

@kat6 read it again.

As for video out (if it gets implemented through USB-C) it opens a lot of possibilities.

If there ever will be a new jolla phone, it should provide the hw-quality of the old nokias N8 or N9 combined with the performance of modern middle-class smartphones and a very good/fast camera. So, quality and camera is for me more important than the newest processor and additional features. Would buy immediately :)

Just my thoughts! I would like to get a solid HW with high end camera. AND open as much as possible - SW as well as HW. Do not mess with your openness!

disagree with most of your point. especially j1 beeing mediocre. if we use xar metaphers - i want a volvo p1800s. lasting for millons of km, relaxed driving (ferrari+fast is neither relaxing nor evonomixal). and volvonis eady to repair and maintain. so no- bigger, better, faster is apple style. id like something more solid and lasting.every 2 years a phone is what my mobile provider would like to sell. no one really needs a ferrari to drive.

Your comparison is out of discussion. I would compare Ferrari with Vertu. Jolla 1 has a poor camera, very poor IPS display, poor sound quality both speaker and jack, no USB OTG, no FM radio, no barometer, no heart rate, no usable NFC and the list can continue...

The car metaphor was to showcase that HW and SW have to work in unison. There have been numerous great products that there weren't the biggest and fastest yet they were more than a sum of their parts because of the way they worked. In car terms that could be the original NSX and in phone terms the N9.

Other than that J1 wasn't well build, was big, felt weird in the hand and the camera apart from not being great is also slow. There is like half a second delay from the time you'll hit the button and from what will be shown on the image.

no heart rate

This sounds like those freaks that cannot make their daily training when your phone battery is dead. „W00t, cannot share my heartbeat/kilometers/whatever in ALL the social media, this training would be useless!”. I know, different people has different needs. I like cash, i like Jolla for not being US based OS, I like Jolla for gestures UI. Dont need those fancy stuff. Better battery, double the cores and RAM and thats all.

Just deliver next device! :)

Yeah, no heart rate? Good! A phone that has a heart rate monitor is not one I'd care to have. Leave that crap for the Android-junkies.

But Jolla sbj-1 does have HRM compatibility, I use mine with a Magellan heart-rate belt.

You just have to build the BTLE stack yourself.

Actually I think the main problem to be addressed is that there should simply be a SailfishOS device for sale somewhere so enthusiasts can buy one. And that is not just enthusiasts in BRICS but also in Europe and the US. SailfishOS lacks credibility if they can't and the community of users won't grow as a result.

A good camera is nice, but I don't think people buy a SailfishOS device for its camera. They buy it for the OS. Look at the trouble people went through to buy an Intex from India.

IMO Jolla were too risk-averse with the very small batch of Jolla C devices, which sold out in 24 hours. There is no market for 100K devices, and they don't have the cash to build that many devices anyway, but they could have ordered 5000 and they would sell out in a week, or 10000 and it would sell out in a month.

I also think that if Jolla re-sold Fairphone (or some other company's product) with an additional 20$ fee to Jolla for SailfishOS support, many people would go for it. And then Jolla has zero risk in sourcing the device.

Yes, they don't want to compete with their licensees, but as long as there are no licensees selling into Western Europe or the US, there is not competition anyway.

As reselling Fairphone concerns, first lower the price by €250 then add $20 for the OS. Then we can talk.

I would have bought the Fairphone with SailfishOS a year ago, but now I think the hardware is to old and they never hinted or announce updates on the modules. Why should I pay a premium when there are no new modules? For easy repair? I still use the N900 as podcast player I never craced a screen on a phone, people just need to be more regardful with their tech toys.

A faster, better camera is sorely needed. Also, OTG support is something I've felt missing. Third in line, better processor. FM radio is way down the list. There is software in Warehouse which streams Sailfish display over IP, so video out is not an urgency.

Much-needed SW improvements and openness do not belong in this answer. Now that I've found my way to this forum I'll request them elsewhere. Happy New Year evrybody, BTW

In all likelyhood it will be a similar deal to the Jolla C, which was a minorly modified Intex Aqua Fish.

So what do we have in the pipeline? IMO the most likely candidate for the next community device seems to be the Oysters SF phone, which looks like a reasonable device. Maybe it won't suit everyone, especially the one-handers amongst us due to the size, but at this point in time beggars can't really be choosers.

@ApB Remember that Jolla doesn't make devices anymore, and so they don't really get any say on the hardware side of the devices the customers choose to put sailifsh on. Jolla goes to the effort of the Community Devices really as a thank you to their fans in Europe, they don't make any money from the venture it's purely a PR exercise.

@r0kk3rz

I know that and i wouldn't like them to offer a full line of devices. But i'd be happy if they could produce a quality device every 2-3 years.

As for the community devices the result is not enough (ie jolla C) IMO. It might sound ungrateful but people need a device/tool they can rely upon. JC was designed with a pricepoint in mind, not to showcase SFOS or be the a tool.

the aqua fish was designed to be cheap for sure, the Jolla C was just the Aqua Fish and it was either that or nothing. Personally i'm happy with mine, its pretty good considering the price.

They had someone come along and offer to make an expensive premium sailfish phone, and that was Turing, who may or may not be dead... I guess we will see if anything further comes from them.

At the end of the day you can list your wishes all you want, but somebody needs to pony up the cash to get these things actually built

@r0kk3rz I don't disagree but to make money you need to spend money. And this is a decision for the board of directors and the CEO. They need to come up with a device that not only the hardcore supporters or a company/partner will want to buy.

IMO, a phone should be reliable and lasting. The phone that need not change every 2 years. I see some effort have made by Fairphone 2 in this line. It is important to keep the OS' openness and it will be great if we could collaborate with some one who is ready to be open in hardware side also. Instead of have very high end hardware can we use the power of OS to make it work better (I appreciate the fact that no one can replace good hard ware with software. But my concern is to improve the quality of existing hardware with better applications. For instance, can we have better image processing tool which could use power of linux to improve the quality of image taken. Currently in my Aquafish, the camera application is naive. If the camera app could process multiple images and select the better one out of it, 8 MP resolution is reasonable. I agree that it won't match with camera of high-end phones). How much of sensors and chances of surveillance (tracking) should be allowed could be debated. Meanwhile, I feel that jolla needs to go little bit further more to become a good linux community which supports the users in better way. I am for high end phone: if it is long lasting and able to repair. I prefer to have openness preserved. I am for low end phones like Aquafish: It will not burden my wallet and works smoothly. Of course it has disadvantages of less quality images, some android apps wont work etc. But I prefer Sailfish over android in most cases. (But use many android apps on my phone as I couldn't find the appropriate alternatives in sailfish ;) )
