After losing my Jolla a while back, I've been keeping an eye out for new releases of sfos in the European market (with updated android VM support), but except the Turing phone and a few maybes, it seems as if Jolla is leaving the European market aside, instead looking towards the Russian/Indian market (which seems like an OK idea). Does anyone know if sfos will be bought to the european market again?

Although I have the Jolla C and the Intex Aqua Fish, I'd love to see a new device on the european market. Or even better worldwide.

Trying to convince people of SailfishOS is not of much use when there is no device available where it runs on.

No, real partner device in Europe or US any time soon. Might be some lowend, low quantity device like a community development device.

Jolla collecting money to push the rest of the refund soon. Instead, I hope.

Nope, nothing on the horizon. Especially the 'oysters SF' looks like a dead project. Seems like we are doomed to keeping the old devices alive. At least, its good for the environment. :P

Yep, Jolla may win 2017 "Most green company of the year !" Nothing produced, nothing wasted. Same as Puzzlephone's Green Electronic Council’s 2016 Catalyst Award.

Would be interesting to have some insights on why the 'oysters SF' disappeared. Whether it was technical, lack of interest/foreseeable profits or disagreement with Jolla.

I agree but that would mean to give us something that Jolla never wants to give: Information.

Perhaps this isn't news to anyone here, but I got confirmation via Twitter that FairPhone is no longer planning any sort of official SFOS release. At one point, they said they might. The community port is a legendary effort, but without any possibility to buy Alien Dalvik (or some other solution) separately at the moment, that makes SFOS a tricky proposition for many.

I hope we hear something soon, or else the number of sailors will keep dwindling as the hardware packs in.

So perhaps all of us should buy the next phone to support the idea. I now feel sorry I missed the turing pre order campaign.

I thought I'd summarize the info that was written up until now on this question: if I understood correctly, it's unknown if any devices with sfos will enter the European market anytime soon. Nothing has been heard from Jolla, or other possible partners. Hopes are that something will be announced at MWC 2017. For the most part of Europe at the moment, the Intex Aqua Fish from India seems like the only possibility, but the Aqua Fish isn't allowed in Germany, (And it does not have the best hardware available). That's if you don't count the Fairphone 2, in which case you have to port sfos, or the Turing phone, which hasn't really been released to the market yet (or in Kollins words: I'm not interested in mobile mythology!).

After rereading the posts, I'm figuring that cemoi71s idea of gathering enough people to show Jolla that there is interest in the European market might not be a bad one. Any suggestions or opinions on that?

Jolla knows the interest in Europe, I'm sure. Topic comes up too often and Jolla C was sold out too fast, to not know it...

We simply need more community ports. If we are really so much Jolla lovers wit the need for better HW, we could finance a port to aquaris X5 for example.

I am still evaluating SFOS on Intex Aqua Fish. At the moment my wife is beta testing it. Unfortunately SFOS does not meet my needs for a business phone - a one I can relay on. First of all because it does not support full PIM synchronization - only contacts. The second major problem is that it does not ring while caller hears the ring tone - which a major problem. This is confirmed on Jolla C by Marco here and here ATM I am thinking of buying refurbished N9 phones, but I still have to evaluated what packages are still available for N9. It is really a sad story - especially this hypocrisy in Europe about free market and competition, about CE certification and support/warranty etc. Europe seems to be totally enslaved by mainstream and anything else has enormous price. Unfortunately it does not look like it will end soon. Very sad! Back to the main topic: It looks like a phone can not cost below 200€ to be modern enough and usable, but who would by a phone for 500-1000€ with this version of SFOS? Even if hardware would be ok, it would be too expensive for a toy - a toy for developers. I just hope Jolla would deliver a stable and reliable version, which is most important ATM. aquaris X5 looks really good and price is reasonable + BQ provides flash utility. Would it work for SFOS? How much would it cost to port (write drivers if needed, check licenses etc)? Is it feasible? Until it's done , they wont produce it anymore. Again really sad! I just hope Jolla has a plan - they seem to be smart, so fingers crossed.

@h.bert i know that community ports are important, but without enough native apps, the ports do not reach most possible consumers, as Jolla still hasn't implemented alien dalvik on the ported sfos

Sipher ( 2017-02-01 08:05:06 +0300 )edit

and Jolla will probably never implement alien dalvik on the ported sfos, because of licensing issues, which renders all those ports useless or dev toys as we can not expect that skype, whatapps or whatever other apps that are frequently used will be ever ported to SFOS. I use even firefox for android because the default browser does not work with many pages

deloptes ( 2017-02-01 12:07:25 +0300 )edit

Yes, I know alien dalvik and T9 will not work. Also maps shouldn't be available on aported device. But for me it's not too important to use android apps, because there are alternatives over web browser. The cheap hardware and especially the bad camera of the aqua fish bothers me most.

I don't believe that a port should be a thing for all the 'usual' customers, but It could be a possibilty for users with special hw-needs. At the moment it's also hard to buy a device for a port, because most ported devices are sold out. So, we would need a port on modern and buyable hardware in my opinion ;-)

Intex Aqua Fish is still available to Europe (except Germany). Also at least a new community device has been promised and for European corporate clients something seems to be coming soon.

aie aie aie don't you think that the hardware spec is already old?
Ok for a transition, if some one really need a new one. ok

Expectations are not to have the very last technology, but not a really old too, and this one is for me already up to date.
For a new phone, would be bad that in one year we could do nothing with it.
Did you saw what bq for example do? that are middle class and sub class phones, and are really better than the aquafish. My opinion...

Even for Russian standards isn't the https://together.jolla.com/question/155188/russian-post-plans-to-purchase-15000-phones-with-sailfish-rus/ news source any kind of serious. pls. keep that in mind.^^

And it don´t support german 4G / LTE on O2

evo3de ( 2017-02-01 12:34:43 +0300 )edit

AF has better specs than J1, but the frequences don't match my operator's, Swedish Tele2. I only get 2G on my device.

1chb ( 2017-02-01 12:54:05 +0300 )edit

@1chb forget jp1 here, is obsolete for some month ago. and AF is near on the way to be obsolete too for the context having and design a new phone.

The major problem, as I understand it, with ports for any kind of phone via the community is that it does not include Alien Dalvik, which in return renders all android apps unavailable. Correct me if I am wrong.

There were some people reporting to own Turing phone. I will subscribe next and have a look what, when and at which price they offer. IMO this is the best option for the future.

The Intex Aqua Fish is really good for the price, but honestly speaking it is a miserable hardware specs. For the price though it is excellent - God bless Intex! I am looking forward to visit my relatives in Germany and see if it works or not there.

For me the Aqua fish works in Germany but only with 3G (Berlin). Other users say there is 4G also possible in berlin, but strangely not for me with my sims (congstar (telekom) and medion (e-plus). Import wasn't a problem over dhl express and 3G is enough for my needs

h.berd ( 2017-02-01 15:02:27 +0300 )edit

Thank you h.berd. Very good news. I also did not have any problem importing it to Austria. The toll fee was around 23€
