What do you think are the new community device specs? [not relevant]

Jolla most likely will unveil new community device at Barcelona MWC at the end of february 2017. They hinted at it in Fosdem video conference by calling it "Jolla C+". I think that means it will be very similar to Jolla C. Biggest complaint -as far as I can tell- with Jolla C has been its camera. My guess of the specs of Jolla C+ are that it has 3GB of ram instead of 2GB and it has better camera. Otherwise it is identical to Jolla C. What do you guys think? I'm hoping to get one to replace my Jolla 1.

Jolla C+ is only a name, it will be nothing like the previous Jolla C

i just hope it'll be smaller thzn the Jolla C and with a better camera :(

ClumsyRooster ( 2017-02-17 00:11:13 +0300 )edit

To be honest, I just hope it will come in greater numbers than Jolla C. Back at the time I got the news just one day after release and was already way too late, not that I really needed it. But now the glass of my Jolla 1 is cracked (still useable, but only a matter of time until it won't be anymore) and I would really love to get my hand on a new (and officially supported) device, but I fear that I will constantly need to be on the lookout just not to be 5 minutes too late to the party...

I'd say (and absolutely hope) its a FairPhone 2. The effort to get Sailfish running is mostly done and both companies have been in contact already.

If I'm not mistaken there was some announcement on twitter (or something like that) were they said that they are not planning official support for Sailfish.

sepuka ( 2017-02-16 17:22:49 +0300 )edit

Yes, but for the community device they don't need to provide the same support as for normal end-users.

scharelc ( 2017-02-16 17:25:26 +0300 )edit

OK, I thought that community device = official Sailfish support. I don't see any added value in device that doesn't have all advantages of SFOS.

sepuka ( 2017-02-16 17:38:32 +0300 )edit
1

Oh, I like the idea. Community users don't mind to have to use the terminal to install updates, and the port is already existing. They don't have anything to loose by doing that, so.. why not!

Edit: @sepuka to me Sailfish support means phone warranty and support from care@jolla.com. Jolla C doesn't have that, but has a full Sailfish OS.

Sthocs ( 2017-02-16 17:43:47 +0300 )edit

@Sthocs: it isn't under warranty according to Jolla, but according to EU law it definitely is.

It should have the missing features like compass, gyro or nfc

Yeah, the omission of magnetic compass on the Jolla C is indeed a glaring mistake.

Also don't forget multi color LED with intensity control (the Jolla C LED is just white and can be only turned ON and OFF).

MartinK ( 2017-02-16 17:48:19 +0300 )edit

@balta@MartinK Phone compass should not be relied on in the woods. In the city it is not difficult to determine direction. The phone compass is such useless feature it is good it was removed.

@alloj: Seriously - this really sounds like a flamebait...

What compass is usually used for:

  • arrow to destination in geocaching apps (or basically direction to POI)
  • to determine device pointing vector together with accelerometers and gyros for AR stuff (planetariums, games, etc.)
  • map rotation
  • actual compass application
  • can be used to improve overall sensor accuracy by comparing it's data with other sensors, helping to filter out noise
  • more

Hey

Lets ask back that What would you like it to be as specs wise? :P Then lets see who guesses the closest when MWC is over.

I want a Nokia 6 with SailfishOS on it. (A more powerful processor would be welcome though, but not vital.)

Please give us an AMOLED screen and bring back the glory times of a real LPM screen.

Also the following features would be awesome:

  • Not too big phone (Jolla 1 size with 4,5" display is a good size)
  • redesigned TOH concept (don't let Motorola MOD concept overtake with your idea and pretend to be the first one)
  • better cameras and especially a better camera lens glass
  • a better and powerfull (dual) led flash
  • FM and infrared transmitter + receiver
  • USB C
  • maybe slighltly curved display to support the swipe gestures (like the Nokia N9 screen)
  • available spare parts
  • also please don't drop the already existing features: good design, removable battery, SD card slot, metal frame with Jolla engraving, RGB notification LED, 3.5 headphone jack, compass

Also there are already exisisting polls about requested features:

Please give it a compass this time, that's all I want :)

@Alex I like your suggestions - they are to the point & look generally quite doable with the hardware Jolla should be able to get their hands on (eq. not some cutting edge hardware only the big players like Apple or Samsung can afford to put into customer devices) . :)

I would opt for specs like a Xperia z1 compact - for me the perfect size, good camera, good battery (could be removable though), fast enough - a shame the porting is stuck (and I'm definitely not skilled to be from any help ... - I'm good in hardware and desktop support but no coder ...)

I hope to see the reintroduction of TOH, aka the other half, to the new phone(s). Better would be to have some actual TOH on sale, like wireless charging and slide keyboard.

And with high speed bus (based on usb-c maybe?) to allow more expansion possibilities (multiport dock)

That's one reason why I think it will be (or at least should be) the PuzzlePhone. That has the equivalent to the TOH via USB intrinsincly inbuild into it's modular design.

Is the security phone developement deal between Jolla and SSH Communications Security still around? They announced back in 2015 they are developing a security phone for governments, companies and inviduals who need privacy and security on their phones for reasonable price. Could it be something related to that?

The Jolla C+ will have a ARMv8 64 bit proc, otherwise the update to Version 2.1.x won´t make sence

Edit: I mean the architecture change for AArch64 support

Updating to a much newer Qt release doesn't make sense otherwise? What are you smoking?

Oysters SF will be MTK 64bit anyway.

Oysters SF has disappeared from their Web page. Either it's been converted into the Jolla C+, or it's cancelled for good.

@evo3de the work on aarch64 was done by the community, not Jolla so much so its not necessarily part of customer driven work

r0kk3rz ( 2017-02-17 17:49:15 +0300 )edit

@r0kk3rz yes, it was done by the community. But now it´s officialy released in mainline. To ensure the quality of implementation they have to test it first on a development reverence device. No one will release / licence a commercial ARMv8 Device before this job is done

A device as Jolla Smartphone it would be great. My wife bought last month an Android 150€ Very bad quality, unusable, very bad voice sound. This month she changed with an iphone5 and she paid about 350€. Totally: 500€, because we cannot buy a Jolla ! She find iphone very difficult, the menus are unusable. I tried to help her, impossible to create an account for the Shop. It says type your password and click Next but there is no Next button. As she uses also my Jolla, she tries the same gestures in iphone, i explained her that this phone doesn't work like that... It seems that is easier for her the Sailfish environment.

Please make a jolla device available to buy. It is the best phone of all over the world today.

I second this, no matter what specs. Last time I did not manage to get a Jolla C. The real question should be how many will be produced?

What follows is more of a series of thoughts than an answer, and I realise I went off track almost immediately. Apologies. Anyway, here it is:

The hardware raw power will not really matter, at this point. Of course, the more the better, but unfortunately Jolla cannot compete with Apple and the multitude of manufacturers of Android devices, hw wise. It is simply too late, and hw specs age fast.

Jolla needs to deliver something radically different, special, unique, to convince customers it is worth investing time and money in an unknown brand. This is a hard feat to pull. Hard, not impossible.

An idea is a convertible device like the Lumia 950, which would pick up the void left in the desktop market, allowing Linux to gain more traction in the segments abandoned by the other vendors. Another option is a modular watch, a variation of the above concept (a watch with a port expander/docking station when at home). Modularity, imho, is something to invest on. People are tired of having multiple devices and to replace them due to vendors lack of interest, and the ecological footprint is more and more pressing nowadays. People are more attentive. Moreover, it is critical to understand software is everything, because software can be fixed: stability, speed, security and reliability. Software should be seamless and never in the way of the user. Avoid at all costs user-hostile choices!

To end: getting some cash flow would obviously be necessary, and for that a thriving and welcoming ecosystem of apps and services (some of them paid) is highly suggested, while still retaining users' freedom to live without them.

"Jolla needs to deliver something radically different, special, unique, to convince customers".

That's why I hope for the PuzzzlePhone. As a modular device, it lifts the idea of the Jolla TOH to a new level. As components can be exchanged throughout the years, it can be maintained for a long time and lacking aspects in the specs can be delivered at a later point in time as needed. And another company than jolla can/will do that job (another finnish one BTW)! Jolla could concentrate on delivering the perfect UX. That looks like the perfect collaboration partners to me.

hubat ( 2017-02-25 13:39:37 +0300 )edit

I agree. It would be the killer mix. If PuzzlePhone were a Sailfish exclusive that would be a fantastic chance to push the OS. It all depends on how willing to bet on SF the PuzzlePhone people are.

spidernik84 ( 2017-02-25 14:07:42 +0300 )edit

@spidernik84 I can't see why the PuzzzlePhone should be exclusively SFOS. As the OS is delivered as a 'brain'-module, there could be the option of an Android brain, SF brain and the like. The more brains the better.

The more people own a PP with the OS of their choosing, the more alternative brains and hearts will be developed and offered, making the overall platform more and more interesting and diverse.

Changing the OS doesn't require flashing the device, just tucking a different brain into the spine and you are good to go. Knowing that you can safely try out an exotic OS and just return to what you know and the exact actual state without having to let go of the investment of the phone if you don't like it could help convincing more people to give it a shot.

hubat ( 2017-02-25 17:42:29 +0300 )edit

I was thinking more as an "initially exclusive", like a few months. But I agree with you on "the more the merrier" :)

It should have 5" display. It's the sweetest spot. But it should not have big bezels. It should have amoled display good version without burn-in problems. It can save battery if you use as many black on screen as possible. I do not care about ram if it's not less then 2 GB. I do not care about CPU as far as it's not slower then nexus 5s. I care about camera a little bit, sound quality, 4 G SD card, removable battery and thickness. The phone should not be more then 8,2 mm thick. The thing i care most is the battery. make it mainstream hardware to save up space for battery, just put in it 3000-3500 mah battery. With amoled screen and this amazing OS it can last forever i think.

I think it will be generic android reference device (2GB, mid end cpu, gpu, camera) or a a little bit upgraded JC.
