Notifications are not currently dismissable. This can get very frustrating when wanting to use that part of the screen, as you have to wait for the notification to go away. Having a way to dismiss them (ie. swiping them away), would be highly appreciated.

There's a patch for that: https://openrepos.net/content/alina/patch-swipe-notifications-dismiss though it doesn't really have a animations or anything but at least it works for dismissing the notification bubble.
I've been trying to develop more sophisticated patch based on that where the notification preview would actually move when you swipe it but there's some problems with that. For some reason it can't be dragged over the left border. Planned features would be that swipe to the left (direction of the events view) would just dismiss the notification and to the right would remove it completely. If any developer would have an idea how to make it able to be dragged over the left screen border, I'm all ears. I'm guessing the system window prevents it somehow.
Of course, the best would be to have official dismiss and remove functions for the notification preview.

Useless as in "not fulfilling or not expected to achieve the intended purpose or desired outcome". The topics are lost, there are no status changes, if jolla involvement is needed it will take at least two years and six community meeting additional to TJC topic to move it forwards even a little. TJC is simply not working for this kind of requests.

It must not be that each and every idea written on TJO finds its way into SailfishOS. Some ideas I read here don't make sense; some are against the overall philosophy of SFOS; some contradict each other.

I just followed the IRC discussion on this topic and wondered how often this would actually be the case. I own one of the first Jolla phones ever delivered (early Dec. 2013) and used it as a daily driver ever since early 2014 when some of the most crucial bugs were ironed out.
I cannot remember one single moment when a notification covered the part of the screen I wanted to tap on. (It's different for the remorse timer, it sometimes gets in the way.)
In a typical SFOS app, there's no UI element in this place anyway. (There are exceptions.)
Long story short: Can you give examples of when this gets in the way?

A remorse timer seems to be a more likely thing to interfere because it's something that you actively trigger while using your phone. So there's workflows that reproducibly trigger a "wait for remorse timer to disappear" situation. But how likely is it that a notification pops up right when you fiddle with your wifi settings?
Don't get me wrong, if there's an easy way to fix it without breaking the overall UI paradigm and without binding ressources, then they should think about it. But given all the serious problems we still have in SailfishOS, I'd be not very amused to find developers working on this instead of fixing the browser etc.

Remorse timer allows you to undo an action and e.g. flight mode starts remorse timer but toggling wifi should not. I'd assume that you are talking about info banners such as "Connected", "Developer mode in use", "Charging...".
If you have not noticed info banners can be dismissed by tapping them.
