I thing 50€ is to much especially for those how do not know Sailfish in a daily use. In the long term Jolla will loose money, when the price is to hight for those people who just want to have a try with Sailfish Os.

In my opinion the following would be a better price management.

25€ - Half year Sailfish Os for beginners. Have a new experience with your smartphone.
50€ - Two years Sailfish OS for sailors to have support for a new device.
10€ - One year continuation with Sailfish Os device updates.

I hope everybody will vote for this. I guess this is better for Jolla and for the sailors.

What I hope for is that the source code of Sailfish OS one day will be fully open. That foundation would receive more than 50€ as donation from me.

Meanwhile I continue using two Jolla phones (j1 and jC) while I wait for the Sailfish OS port for my rose gold Sony Xperia X. It would be nice if there was a cheaper non-alien version to buy yet I don't hesitate to pay the full sum because I help others get Android app support. Call me crazy.

@TuxNix Are you a troll? Jolla has already thought about the prices and the future. I think they do not pursue this strategy. If a free operating system per year is not worth 50 EUR, but should remain with IOS or Android.

@vattuvarg I wouldn't call you crazy. I agree with you. But Jolla has to bring people to the task to pay for new official device ports and for longtime support of the hopefully soon fully opened Sailfish OS. For this I think an other price structure would be helpful.

To test an android phone you need to buy one, at least a second hand one. But there are plenty of android phones out there so the cost of trying can be low. The problem so far with Sailfish phones is that having just one at a time to choose from is a bit limiting. But when I bought the Jolla C there were fewer than 2000 units. Now, with the XX, the number is much higher.

(Funny thing about that way of abbreviating Xperia X... I discovered that there is a band called the XX too. ...and that I like their music.)

Jolla is a profit-oriented company. As a profit-oriented company, they need to strike an equilibrium between number of units sold and at what price they sell units. It should be expected that Jolla did not come up with the 50.00 price point out of thin air but because they thought they could maximize their profit with that price. As a community, we should want them to be able to achieve profitability as without Jolla, SailfishOS will probably be turning into DodoOS real quick.

Concerning your trial argument: Sailfish is available for free (without the proprietary bits) for a large and increasing number of devices through community ports. I have no doubt (and Jolla indicated as much from the onset) that there will be a community port to the Xperia X. If people want to try Sailfish, why not start there? Also, you assume that people are willing to purchase the hardware for 250ish Dollars/Euros/... to try out Sailfish but then are a) not able to install a community port on the device and b) not willing to pay 50 bucks extra to get the official Sailfish for the full term?

We should strengthen community ports to other devices (Kudos to all the developers!) so that people interested can use their existing handsets to try Sailfish. Maybe they stay with a community port. Maybe they afterwards commit to the investment of hardware and SailfishX.

50 EUR is a fair price. I don't think Jolla should change anything. For all this, who find 50,- EUR is to much - Jolla will open the repositories and this people will be able to built they own version of Sailfish X without Alien Dalvik, XT9 and Exchange.

High prices will lead people to the community port not to the Jolla account. 50€ for only one year support is to much, especially when you have to pay for a beta without Bluetooth, FM-Radio and Fingerprint support. But 50€ for two years sounds good to me. On the other side Jolla will loose only the amount of a following year.

I thing Jolla will loose money, because 50€ is to hight to step in and only one year is to short to feel comfortable with this. Jolla will earn money if more people decide to pay for there OS. If less people step in payment they will loose.

It's 50euros, not 50 euros/year.

After one year it is assumed that all the kinks from the system, all the now-yet-unworking-parts are supported and normal system upkeep continues.

With ~two updates/year 50€ is very high in my opinion, and if the following years require users to put in more money this won't fly far.

My interpretation of this is: Jolla wants 50€ now, and after a year they want some money more for continuation updates. For me, it sounds much better when the first 50€ would be for two years support. And I think Jolla can win money when they do so.
