Further enhancement idea - make the camera button configurable with individual possible actions suiting to the variable needs of the users.
For example on my N900, the camera button is custom configured like this:
- light/half press (normally triggers focus) switches to the running app overview
- full press (normally takes a picture) starts the camera app

Further enhancement idea - double tap the camera button to launch the camera in lock screen mode (similar to how you can double-tap the power button to unlock the phone).

Not at the moment, and I'm happy about this.
As I bought my JP1 three years ago, it was a great surprise to have a phone and an OS without hardware buttons, except volume and on/off. SFOS is made to work without home or camera button, and I think this is one of the main features in design of gesture based SFOS.
In my opinion hardware button for camera is made to launch it accidently, that's a mess for me. If you have to unlock your phone first you can also launch camera app by swipe gesture from bottom edge. It's easy and fast.
Dear jolla developers, if you make it possible to launch camera app by hardware button for all who like it, please let me choose in preferences to deactivate this feature.

I think even when we have a nice gesture based UI that when we have buttons we should make use of them. Camera app launch could be very handy if you need to snap something very quickly so you don't miss it. Just click the button at any time when the device is unlocked and then again to take the picture once the camera app starts.
While pulling up the app drawer and clicking the icon is not exactly slow, it's definitely slower than just pressing a dedicated hardware button & requires fine pointing to click the icon. That could be also an issue in motoricaly challenging situations such as single hand operation, when using mittens, etc.

What I meant is if we get this feature then I wish the opportunity to turn it off, because my experience with other phones is that sometimes I accidentally hit the button and the camera app starts while I write a message e.g.

Another enhancement I know from the iphone:
If camera is active and not in the background: enable each hardware button to activate the shutter. Really like this feature on the iphone of my gf, because:
- no need to search for camera button
- makes snapshots even easier
- no more accidental mixing of power or volume and camera buttons

The camera button not working is a disappointment. It would makes operating the camera a lot easier for me.
maybe the button can made so that you can choice what app to launch

Good stuff ! So it is all there to get the cam up and running by pressing the cam button anywhere, isn't it? Would make sense...
Another point to consider: When using the cam button within the app why is there not an autofocus applied upon first soft press - and then take the picture? Simply behavior as every day to day digicam. Just stating what my anticipated user experience would be here.
