If your new here and want to know more about polling here in Together, see this first: https://together.jolla.com/question/16697/together-howto-polling-in-together/

The idea of this poll is very simple. Which "special" or normal other half would you like to have the most in Jolla if these other half's would be available on shop right now?

There will be 8 different Other Half options available for voting. It could be also called an "unofficial competition" for favourite Other Half.

UPDATE!

The Other Half contest for Other Half Option 8 Contestant has ended and the winner chosen by Marc Dillon (@Marc) is:

@mgbler

with Ambience Light The Other Half idea!

Ambience Light TOH: Integrated fiberglass combined with LED so that the whole TOH or parts of it glow in adjustable colors. Could also be used as WakeUp Light

@mgbler 's Ambience Light TOH idea is also available for voting in this poll as the option number eight!

Thank you for everyone in participating and please remember to vote for your favourite from the current eight different options available.

For general discussion I made a separate answer box "Chatbox" where you can add own comments regarding different other half's found at the bottom of the page.

For this poll to be honest, choose only one option from eight. No cheating!

Thanks.

These options will be wiki posts so no karma is awarded from it.

Now start voting please! What is the other half of your dreams?

extended battery for option 6?

Dual-sim card ability maybe for option 8 ? As mentionned here : Dual-Sim

Moved from the voting options: In order to be practical, the physical QWERTY keyboard TOH would most likely also require that the phone can always be operated in landscape mode. Just having a keyboard would not be enough on its own.

how about a more rugged TOH, probably made of hard rubber? At least one with a durable and non-slippery coating.

about full keyboard TOH: this would be nice indeed, but it has to be very compact. The phone isn't the smallest by default design and to my preference a sleek and light overall appearance of the device would outweigh the benefits of a full keyboard.

I would really love the dual-SIM option as well - especially if it was a DSA (Dual SIM Active), meaning that both SIM cards can be active and connected to their respective networks at the same time.

Option 4: Keyboard other half with physical keyboard (for example QWERTY layout). If you like this most give your vote.

Just answered quite similar post to the "8th option poll". QWERTY keyboard would be the best thing to have on a phone. But it could be also possible to add QWERTY and better battery together as well. These two things added to Jolla and it would be the best phone ever (yes dear N9, your position as The One is threatened).

timzi ( 2014-01-22 15:12:44 +0300 )edit

Maybe with a HTC Desire Z-like slider mechanism

qwerty keyboard is good but then it makes having landscape rotation even more important. using landscape keyboard while phone is in portrait mode is less than ideal, though it is functional.

droll ( 2014-01-24 17:45:52 +0300 )edit

This would require a much better landscape support.

How about a combination of the QWERTY keyboard and the wireless charging, as the QI-receiver pad, showed in Sepehr James Nooris article, does not seem to take up much space (Naturally looks can deceive and make this impossible).

HW keyboard will be fine, problem is that the layout is different in more or less every country ...

IMHO this is THE MOST IMPORTANT TOH-idea that could really distinguish Jolla from all the other phones. Battery usage has always been an issue with smart phone. I don't care if battery-TOH would be a bit heavier & maybe larger than the basic one: longer usage time would be SWEET.

t0mps0 ( 2014-01-21 11:04:26 +0300 )edit

I also think that a second battery would be a great idea. Because battery lifetime is normaly the weakest point of smart phones.

Stefan P ( 2014-01-21 13:55:38 +0300 )edit

Making the phone energy efficient and trimming software is also part of that equation, imho. Adding power is nice for most people, though.

vattuvarg ( 2014-01-25 09:04:40 +0300 )edit

Of course, Jolla should not be prevented from making the system as energy efficient as possible by a second battery. But battery power for lets say 5 days would be nice and with a second battery it seems to be possible.

Stefan P ( 2014-01-25 11:52:46 +0300 )edit

@Stefan P - One idea shouldn't exclude the other. Having both a power-sipping phone and a huge battery would result in spectacular standby times...

Option 7: Wireless charging other half. If you like this most give your vote.

Prototype Wireless charging OH here: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=92059

Comments

for wireless charging we do not need a TOH, it is a simple patch you put under the cover... preferably compatible with TOH in terms of connection pass-through

A combination of the QWERTY keyboard and the wireless charging, as the QI-receiver pad, showed in Sepehr James Nooris article, does not seem to take up much space (Naturally looks can deceive and make this impossible).

But this would make it the perfect TOH.

flywheel ( 2014-01-25 04:30:38 +0300 )edit

Wireless charging with automated wireless data connection would be nice. Just as connecting the USB cable but without the wires.

vattuvarg ( 2014-01-25 09:13:43 +0300 )edit

Some time ago I was very much in favor of this, but as there still are very few wireless-charger pads out there e.g. in public places, I think this might not be so cool to have, after all.

foss4ever ( 2014-01-30 05:16:52 +0300 )edit

This plus a second NFC antenna so that the phone can connect to other things via NFC.

Option 2: Other Half fitted with solar panel. If you like this most give your vote.

The only real prototype currently for solar panel other half is this: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=92317

edit flag offensive delete publish link more

Comments

I am not sure about this. Maybe you can help me understand this idea. Is such a small solar panel strong enough to charge the battery? Can I use it while it charges the battery? And how it the battery life affected by heat and direct sunlight?

PyroDevil ( 2014-01-21 20:28:47 +0300 )edit

Thanks! Maybe adding links to each TOH prototype would help decide which the best is?

PyroDevil ( 2014-01-21 21:03:20 +0300 )edit

UPDATE: There are actual real-life concepts for each Other Half type here except the one with extra battery and metal other half, although I believe it is still possible to make these.

TimTTK ( 2014-01-21 21:14:57 +0300 )edit

I can imagine myself, happy camping on a greek island with a solar panel OH!! Awesome!

petros ( 2014-01-22 11:12:57 +0300 )edit

IKEA makes a solar powered LED light called Sunnan. It has a removable block with a solar panel combined with a rechargable battery. Charge the block in a window and then connect it to the lamp when charged. Need more power? Buy more than one. A solar TOH with a battery could be used like that.

Option 3: Metal other half (aluminium) with removable cover for camera lens and flash. If you like this most give your vote.

edit flag offensive delete publish link more

Comments

Would be nice, but it might lead to poor radio network sensitivity. Considering that Jolla has aluminium frame already. By the way my Jolla phone has way better radio reception than even N9 had.

targon ( 2014-01-21 18:04:33 +0300 )edit
1

Could be quite complicated as the plastic other half has to be bent to remove it. Aluminium doesn't like being repeatedly bent generally unless you use quite expensive alloys. Even then I think you'd have to use latches or it'll jyst be a bitch to get to the battery/SIM.

aegis ( 2014-01-22 12:39:54 +0300 )edit

yeah I don't think the aluminium is necessary here...

I guess the idea is about camera lens + flash.

wrap a TOH in Al-Foil and try yourself what happens with cell/wifi reception...

chemist ( 2014-01-24 15:51:07 +0300 )edit

Can it be made of liquidmetal? I think the zirconium based one is nonmagnetic so I'm wondering if it will not interfere with data signal. Something like this http://youtu.be/jMkmTMArB70 You can upload your CAD here http://liquidmetal.us/our-products/upload-your-cad/ Also a liquipel treatment of the phone would be nice.

I'd still prefer e-ink. Backlight be damned, just give me text that stays when the phone turns off.

orjans ( 2014-01-22 17:43:56 +0300 )edit

@alci Agreed. We definitely need to have a solution to overcome the lack of LPM in Jolla device screen. And OLED/e-ink TOH would be perfect (with some options to configure what will be shown there: date, notifications, time, battery charge etc). And, this should be easy to combine with other stuff in the same TOH, like kbd and extra-battery..

I'd love to have an OH that changes its colour to the ambience set and would flash when receiving a call. As an idea I love it and would probably get one, but I do need a HW keyboard.

fasza2mobile ( 2014-02-08 03:49:12 +0300 )edit

This should have been labeled "cheapest and fastest to produce other half option that we did not think of" because that is what it ended up being. I'm so stupid for thinking/imagining that that would not be the end result. It's just a baby company so any other ideas should have been skunkworks tagged.

aironeousb ( 2014-02-09 07:55:22 +0300 )edit

@aironeousb "[...] cheapest and fastest to produce [...]" which is not a bad thing, is it? :-) I'm very happy this option will get considered. There were many good ideas in the contest, many of them sophisticated. As Jolla grows, their capability to expand their hardware portfolio will hopefully grow too... <3

An OH with extra battery and radio capability in order to connect to small RF devices with sensors like temp, humidity, etc. There are a lot of small RF modules with arduino compatibility (i.e. NRF24LE1 NRF24L01+MCU).

The Sensordrone already exists with Android apps for it http://www.sensorcon.com/sensordrone/ it is only missing a CO2 sensor that could be in the other half. A other half that a sensordrone can slip into and act as a kickstand and can be detached might be an answer here or even asking that company to make the sensordrone in a different shape.
