I somehow miss the unique look of the Jolla 1 and aqua fish and especially their logo on my xperia x. I am happy that Sony lets me run Sailfish OS on their device (somehow stupid to be thankful for this, I bought the hardware, I didn't lease it), but I would like to have a sailfish or Jolla logo on the device and on the startup screen. I still have a few of the round "Jolla" stickers from my first phone, has anybody ever used them on a phone? How long do the last before they fall apart or loose their color? Or maybe use brother P-touch labels and their custom software for own labels? edit See my answer for P-touch labels

Any other ideas like laser engraving or other technique to change the visual appearance?

Is there a way to replace the Sony logo on device startup and maybe get rid of the stupid warning about unlocked phone?

as i dont know how the phone looks- just a thought: for j1 and tablet lastu had cases or just wooden "stickers" where engraving a logo or so was possible. maybe this is available for xoeria also. comes wirh a higher price though.

edit- i will praise the day that my fat fingers only hit the letters i want and dont create typos. written with j1

... James Noori on October 13, 2017 at 5:20 pm Hi, currently there is no way to get rid of that as it is a requirement by Sony if you have an unlocked bootloader.

Therefore I would say: No way to get rid of the warning... In the meanwhile I consider the warning as "Hello SailfishX" welcome message and don't mind it anymore.

I did the Jolla branding on the XperiaX as follows: https://twitter.com/winny__z/status/920433638134689792

Since the backside is protected and since I have 10 stickers at home I would say this kind of branding is safe ;)

Other people did it like this:

The second twitter discussion was quite interesting, look at this: https://www.redbubble.com/people/localhost/works/13078269-jolla-goodies?p=sticker :)

OK... The phone needs to inform the user that the bootloader is unlocked. But could the message be modified to say that the bootloader is unlocked to allow the phone to use Sailfish OS? If the displayed image is adapted to the "Sailfish look" then it would be less of an eyesore. ...without braking the policy.

The warning is displayed by the bootloader.

For obvious reasons, the current bootloader will not accept to display custom spashscreen (Sony's logic being : otherwise, an attacker could make a custom version of Android with built-in (additional) spyware, and then ask the bootloader to display a custom splashscreen that pretends to be a totally legit stock vanilla Sony Xperia rom).

The solutions would be for Sony to produce a new bootloader, that in addition of Sony' public key, has also keys from Jolla, so that it can also recognize official boot/recovery kernels produced by Jolla and signed from them, and display a special boot screen (e.g.: "This device runs a 3rd party rom, officially made by Jolla")

For that to work, is also need that the bootloader be flashable (it might by stored on a permanent rom). In that case, the only possible route is similar to what is done with UEFI Secure Boot : Jolla must make a shim/minimal boot layer, that gets signed by the official Sony keys (so that it can boot without warning on an official un-/re- locked Xperia) and it's the role of that shim to check the integrity of Jolla's boot image and display appropriate splashscreen (Official Jolla boot image found) or warning (Warning boot screen).

If you don't want to read the full story, here is a 120pixel high PNG with the new Sailfish OS logo for Brother P-touch:

SailfishOS_logo-compressed-120px-slim_fonts.png

SailfishOS_logo-compressed-120px-slim_fonts.png

You can print this on 18mm tape (for example TZe-145) on a device like the P-touch 2730 using ptouch-print

You can also print it on 24mm tape, most printers can only print a 8 additional pixels height on 24mm (The exception are printers for 36mm tape), if you want to use those additional 8 pixels, I suggest you add a bit more space between the logo and the text (I put them closer together to make the end result a bit larger).

If you want to print it on smaller tape, It is probably easiest to cut it in half and print the text and the logo separately.

Jolla-Logos:

This one is rotated to make most use of the available Space on 18mm tape

joll-logo-rotated-120px.png

jolla-logo-rotated-120px.png

If you print on non-transparent tape, the rotation may not look to good, therefore this one is not rotated:

jolla-logo-120px.png

If you need something else, tell me, I may take the time to create it.

Jolla once had a selection of different logos to chose from, If you got a file with the other logos, I am interested in it.

This is how I developed this:

For those interested in the P-touch attempt, I quickly tried it on Linux using the Software ptouch-print and a scaled down logo, this is how my try on 24mm tape looks like: Sailfish OS Logo on Brother P-touch

As you see, there is still room for improvement. Basically, the source image is not allowed to be higher than 128 pixels (for 24mm tape), and it must be pure black and white (gray areas get lost, the label printer is monochrome only).

The topmost image had to much gray areas and has therefore some missing parts.

For the second image, the logo was moved nearer to the text to make the end result a bit larger. After scaling it down, the image was sharpened heavily to get rid of gray ares and have thicker lines. Unfortunately, the sharpening leads to some kind of "artifacts" on the letters.

The third image again had to much gray areas due to scaling.

The result doesn't meet my expectations (yet). If someone is better with gimp (or other software), I am happy to get the logo in pure black and white version without ugly artifacts, and little space between the text and the logo. If I manage to improve it myself, I will of course provide it.

Update 20171129 I have tried the "P-Touch Editor" software from Brother in the meantime (on 18mm white on transparent tape), it doesn't do a better job at scaling. Especially the letters look bad, they are fuzzy, probably because of dithering used in the process of scaling.

Also, 18mm provides almost the same amount of usable space, it looks like the printer (at least my model) is limited to 128 vertical points on 24mm tape (with some margin on the top and bottom of the tape), while the 18mm tape is limited to 120 vertical points with almost no margin. Sailfish OS Logo on Brother P-touch 2nd attempt

Description of the different prints starting at the topmost:

  1. Black on white, 24mm, printed with P-touch Editor, note ugly fonts

  2. Black on fluorescent yellow, 24mm, as seen in first image

  3. White on transparent, 18mm, looks like ptouch-print was smarter than I though and printed it tranparent on white due to the black part in the image.

  4. White on transparent, 18mm, this time I got the colors right. I will probably clean it up a little bit by hand and then publish the image.

Nice with the Lastu cover! Would you recommend it? How well does it protect the phone?

Btw, isn't that the older Sailfish OS logo? Compare to this: https://sailfishos.org/

It covers the back and edges but not the screen directly. Edges are a bit higher than the screen. I like the olf logo more. :)

They probably no longer have the ability to sell and deliver physical goods, but they could work together with another company and sell official products in one ore more selected only shops.

Like they did with Mapbagrag with the Jolla 1 Source Code bag. On the other hand, you can have customized bags etc. from them anyway.
