For the 4th or 5th time I received multiple copies ( now: 8 at once !) answers on a question posted here. Any way to suppress / fix this ? As I am not permanently participating in this forum it's annoying as I tend to overlook other (singly arrived) messages, which can be a danger for duplicate questions & misunderstandings ... As I still can't upload any (self-explanatory) screenshot - it'll read like this: ""Simple" Idea - flipcover other half" XXXXXXXX commented answer (17 hours ago): @xxxxxxxx I have no idea what you mean by that comment abt 'constantly interfering'..!? In Together I've asked Question ... XXXXXXXX commented answer (17 hours ago): @xxxxxxxx I have no idea what you mean by that comment abt 'constantly interfering'..!? I observed this behaviour too but with less notifications. I think you receive a notfication per comment/answer. On a very acive subject, it's not surprising. :)

Have you checked what kind of settings you have in your Profile => Subscription?

If you use Jolla and default SF browser you are not able to see this selection in your profile. However with Webcat SF browser and turning Jolla to landscape position this seting becomes available for viewing.

FYI: the quoted comment in the.question is my quite long response to a comment I received. I wrote it very quickly cause I had other things to attend to, and noticed it contained quite a many typos that needed to be fixed..Obviously, forgot in the rush to check the minor edit box. I usually try to use it every time it is visible (typed that in Jolla),, so sorry abt those multiple alerts. Will try to be more careful in the future.

@jjaone Did you edit the comment 8 times?

@Keto don't remember anymore, several times cause there was a load of typos.. One reason I keep making them is this Jolla vkbd and it's too short space-bar and not that good haptic feedback.. Aplogizies one more time ;) To be honest, I am not the only one who doesn't always remember to tick minor-edit, recently I've received 5 to 10 alerts from single post few times, too...so please make minor-edit a default in every edit-box there is. Thanks.

@TNZ actually points to the right direction.
Note that if the user doesn't check theminor edit (don't send alerts) checkbox right above the Save edit and Cancel buttons, the notifications will increase every time an edit is made.

@eric Just tested with your answer and Jolla native browser => The minor edit check box is not visible when editing answers - unfortunately.

With Webcat and landscape orientation the check box is available for selection again.

But I remember that some one asked to add the minor edit check box ticked by default, but was it requested for comments at that time. However the same should be applied for the editing answers as well - right?

Kari ( 2014-01-20 15:56:45 +0200 )edit

@Kari: ok, thanks for confirming it is not showing on the mobile version. We can hopefully address this soon... Also note that you should actually try on one of your own question/answer as unless you have the needed credentials, it's the expected behaviour one would receive a notification by default if his/her content has been touched...

eric ( 2014-01-20 16:04:49 +0200 )edit

You're welcome - In my opinion the default check marks on the minor edit boxes for both comment and answer would be the best when ever they are edited. That should reduce the "spam" e-mail for error corrections and small updates as originally intended.

Kari ( 2014-01-20 16:09:36 +0200 )edit

@Kari: So do you also confirm the option is missing when you edit your own content from a mobile browser?

eric ( 2014-01-20 16:13:05 +0200 )edit

For the answers (own and "Other Sailors") there is no check box to choose.

To edit e.g. your comment was not possible with my current authorization

There is also 10min timer to edit own comments, when newer comments to thread has been created.

So I'll publish this one and hopefully I am able to edit it, before it is blocked by another comment.

Updated: For own comments the minor edit check box is visible on Jolla and portrait orientation, but the check box is not selected by default.

The best solution would be to get those check boxes ticked by default in both cases.

Update II: We almost forgot the question. Editing question is currently the same as Answer i.e. the minor edit check box is not visible with Jolla and portrait orientation => Same solution for Question edit as for Answer and Comment is needed.

Update III: And I confirm that own Questions and Answers with Jolla and portrait orientation have this issue, which will also make re-taging the question more difficult

The main issue here is that Askbot does not have notification type for comment edits, so it appears as there is multiple copies of the same comment notification. This will be fixed soon™.

Either the comment edit notifications could be completely disabled or make "minor edit" to be the default for them. But if minor edit is the default, most of the people probably won't bother unchecking it and then it's pretty much the same as disabling the notifications completely. Comments also do not have revision history, so there currently isn't any way to tell what was changed, which makes the notifications even more useless.

Another thing mentioned is that the "minor edit" check-box is not visible when editing question or answer on small screen. Improving the small screen experience and mobile browser compatibility of this site is currently at the top of the list and this issue (and many others) has been noted. :)

Right, thanks for the answer. Because of all those reasons and issues relating to comment notifications wouldn't it be the simplest to just disable them altogether? Would ppl really miss or need them?

Re-opening this question as the soon(TM) fix

This will be fixed soon™.

has not yet arrrived.
I am forced to use the inbox functionality as my e-mail notification stopped working.
But now I have lots of exactly the same notifications in my 'inbox'. So stepping from one bug to another shortcoming ... which was announced to be fixed soon(TM), erm never(Translated).

IMHO as of 2018 - 2020 this issue (or what remains of it) is / has become merely a duplicate of "2. Minor edit flag non-functional".

Aside this issue (i.e., the #2 on the list), Askot simply notifies about any change, no matter how small. IMO there is no other reasonable way to handle that: Even a minimal change (e.g., adding or deleting a "no" or "not" after days) might be relevant.

I do not concur with @Keto's conclusion that simply eliminating this check box would be best (AFAIU) and am glad that this was not carried out meanwhile (from 2014 to 2020). Although this conclusion is literally correct (in an "evil" way), as eliminating that checkbox and permanently setting it to "minor edit" internally would end all hassles with the notifications, as none are generated anymore.

IMO the best solution is to make the "minor edit" checkbox doing what it is supposed to do (but never did since I have been attending TJC in 2015): "don't send alerts"!

P.S.: Its defaults are fine (as of 2018 - 2020): Off when editing a question or answer, and On when editing a comment.

As answer to @olf 's comment as I need to add a picture and do not know how to add one in comments.
I did not visit the forum and you made a new comment, edited it meanwhile 6-7 times to make it nice and I would just.like to see final result. The same final result all these notifications link me to.
Do you really think I need to know how often you needed to edit it?
(if these notifications would give the changes, I agree)

I'd see this as bug. Eypecially as one cannot see history of comments.
But I am okay with any other view on it :)

Oh, and I am, erm was, fine with having the notifications flooding my mail inbox...

While your screenshot looks impressive, you would have received only two notifications due to my edits, if the "minor edit (don't send alerts)" check-box would be functional.
Thus the primary issue is still the broken check-box, which is a technical bug / regression (box is implemented, and supposed to be working or even was working in the past). Fixing it would alleviate the usability issue you depicted.

Plus a new feature for consolidating multiple, consecutive notifications addressing the same question or comment edited by the same TJC-user is a, well ... a feature request.
Hence I do not believe that pursuing or discussing this feature request makes any sense (for Jolla, you and me), because investing the available resources elsewhere (e.g. to get the announced developer forum right) will bring much bigger benefits.

olf ( 2020-05-08 18:24:06 +0200 )edit

Okay, agreed.
Let us call this a feature request. :)
Thanks for your input, time and patience!

Together with the confirmed (and listed by you) bug it makes using this 'inbox' quite ... erm not nice
