Within SMS app and really all other SFOS X apps allow search by name, or gallery and available people images so that next to each message there is the contact avatar:

The crux is if none exists, a random and unique one could be generated:

Random Avatar based on sex, being unique when no image is available, for business contacts it could be the assigned comoany logo, non-unique
