We all have ideas on what improvements we’d like for Sailfish. I thought it would be useful to have a list in one location that allowed fellow Sailors could vote on individual improvements and also add their own suggestions. This way our friendly developers at Jolla could get a feel for what features Sailors think would make Sailfish a better OS.

Some of the suggestions I have included are probably already in the pipeline. Some may be covered by patches but I think are better included in the base OS.

I have included each suggestion as an answer which can be voted on. If you want to add a suggestion, please add your own answer for others to vote on.

These are in no particular order they’re just as I thought of them and grouped with similar features.

Edit: I didn't realise how many pages this would be :)

Don't forget to look at all the pages, there's 22 suggestions or answers to start with.

Why not use the already existing topic? https://together.jolla.com/question/27207/wiki-which-features-do-you-want-next/

@AlanBreen when you do a survey, please make everything a wiki! change all your answers!

@AlanBreen You're duplicating TJC within TJC. Why on earth would you collect ideas for improvements as answers to to this pseudo-question (and thereby repeating the same stuff all over) when the way to use TJC is to put each of them as a separate question (maybe with the tag "idea") and let people vote for these questions.

sorry to say but since.the.roadmap is not maintained or.published since years a pretty useless effort

and correct: a filter for idea does the same, is easier to find ...

and according to the answers it mixes up missing xperia features, general ideas ...

i think it is a bad idea.

It may not be the correct way to handle such a polling/survey over a question, but close to 1100 views in 12 hours reveals how much consideration such a thread has for the community. If the original topic hasn't been fully updated for more than 2.5 years, then it's probably not worth much either. Rules, structure and form are certainly very important, but the content is IMO even more important, isn't it? I think the SFOS product manager should take a closer look at this subject...

Allow for people/contacts to be placed in calling groups (like in Symbian Belle) and add options in the Ambiences to set which calling groups you wish to receive calls from. This allows you to control who and when they can call you.

Built-in call and SMS blocker (I know I can use Phonehook, but I wish this stuff was properly integrated with the OS). I'm not sure if there is any SMS blocker for Sailfish, but this stuff is super important to me.

Improve calendar repetitive event configuration with at least the option to assign a concrete day of a month/year, e. g. the last Friday in January, or every last Saturday of the month. Extended to the extreme, a rule based calendar would be a hit, allowing par example to define events like 30 days before the last Tuesday in November.

Comments

This is a very usefull feature. So many repetitive events don't just match and exact repetition like every two weeks or every four weeks etc.

Add the ability to forward a text. As it is now you have to copy and paste a text in order to forward it.

With the calling groups enabled allow for group texts to be sent. This allows the same message to be sent simultaneously to several people. Once again as in Symbian Belle.

When a ring tone other than a default tone, e.g. a music file, is used allow that ring tone to stay active even after a reboot. e.g. I like to use the orchestral version of the old Nokia ring tone. I have it as a music file on my phone and can set it as the ring tone, but the ring tone always reverts to the Jolla tone after a restart

I think this is a bug and maybe you should open a separate question for it.

I do not understand your requirement here. I my case (SX X/SFOS 2.1.3.7) my individual ring tone selection is already persistent and still available after a device boot…

JMLatJolla ( 2018-01-02 14:49:58 +0300 )edit

@werdinand It may be a bug, though the sane happens on two Sailfish phones, my Jolla C and the Xperia.

@JMLatJolla Are you using a music file or a pre-installed tone?

AlanBreen ( 2018-01-03 09:39:44 +0300 )edit

@AlanBreen I've been using custom mp3 as a ringtone for 3.5 years now and ringtone have been resetting only when changing language and also it happened couple of times after one of the latest update. I wanted to report it but then the bug disappeared.

werdinand ( 2018-01-03 12:43:42 +0300 )edit

@AlanBreen: Oh, yesterday, after a first boot, the setting was persistent, today, after some device restarts, suddenly not anymore (did not make any configuration changes nor installing software in between)…!

Just like in Meego? There is a a patch for this on OpenRepos called DynCal, but I agree it would be better in the core OS

Make the lock screen more informative and customizable, e. g. allowing display cover art while paying music, or showing weather forecast information, or listing upcoming calendar events…

With lock screen showing more data, there is a security/privacy issue - everyone who picks up your phone can read that.

pisarz1958 ( 2018-01-02 15:16:41 +0300 )edit

Hi @pisarz1958, yeah, I'm aware of that, but that's why it has to be customizable. You usually have several e-mail accounts today, some are sensitive, others less. A weather forecast can be tricky, but usually not. Ditto with upcoming appointments or any kind of other information.

JMLatJolla ( 2018-01-02 15:50:57 +0300 )edit

Make the lock screen more informative and customizable, e. g. allowing display cover art while paying music, or showing weather forecast information, ...

... is both already available as Patches, e.g. "Lockscreen analog clock".

OK, tx @olf, will tray. In general: How do the patchmanager patches behave in conjunction with the use and maintenance of the SFOS platform, e. g. in regard of updates or installation of applications? Is there something to consider, complications, incompatibilities? Tx for a brief advice.

Please search, read and understand documentation at OpenRepos and various discussions here on TJC and TMO (talk.maemo.org) by yourself; WRT Patchmanager and Patches for it, or on any other topic.
This is not a support hotline for newbies! Such generic questions ("explain everything about XXX to me) must be rejected, IMO. Please gather some basic understanding of the SailfishOS architecture and what Patchmanager does, first.

If you have a specific question, after carrying out some proper research, I (and many others herself) are sure willing to guide you, if you post it as a question here on TJC.

P.S.: Patchmanager thread on TMO
