We all have ideas on what improvements we’d like for Sailfish. I thought it would be useful to have a list in one location that allowed fellow Sailors could vote on individual improvements and also add their own suggestions. This way our friendly developers at Jolla could get a feel for what features Sailors think would make Sailfish a better OS.

Some of the suggestions I have included are probably already in the pipeline. Some may be covered by patches but I think are better included in the base OS.

I have included each suggestion as an answer which can be voted on. If you want to add a suggestion, please add your own answer for others to vote on.

These are in no particular order they’re just as I thought of them and grouped with similar features.

Edit: I didn't realise how many pages this would be :)

Don't forget to look at all the pages, there's 22 suggestions or answers to start with.

Why not use the already existing topic? https://together.jolla.com/question/27207/wiki-which-features-do-you-want-next/

@AlanBreen You're duplicating TJC within TJC. Why on earth would you collect ideas for improvements as answers to to this pseudo-question (and thereby repeating the same stuff all over) when the way to use TJC is to put each of them as a separate question (maybe with the tag "idea") and let people vote for these questions.

sorry to say but since.the.roadmap is not maintained or.published since years a pretty useless effort

and correct: a filter for idea does the same, is easier to find ...

and according to the answers it mixes up missing xperia features, general ideas ...

i think it is a bad idea.

It may not be the correct way to handle such a polling/survey over a question, but close to 1100 views in 12 hours reveals how much consideration such a thread has for the community. If the original topic hasn't been fully updated for more than 2.5 years, then it's probably not worth much either. Rules, structure and form are certainly very important, but the content is IMO even more important, isn't it? I think the SFOS product manager should take a closer look at this subject...

who started this thread ? an admin or just an everyday user ? (i mean no disrespect). what is the probability that if i request something here it will be taken into consideration by any developer ? if no ( 0% probability) then what is the point of this thread ? if yes ( 100 % probability) then why are so many feature requests already pending ? why don't you see them first ?

Allow to select individually predefined SMS as direct feedback for manually rejected incoming calls, e.g. I'm occupied, I'll get back to you as soon as possible..

In messaging app display the contacts name at the top of the screen when a text string is displayed. Once you have a text string open you have no way of knowing who you are texting

Just on OpenRepos.

That would be great using account function, so files properly update and get proper permissions, sync thing is currently a pain to update;

DarkTuring ( 2018-01-03 03:07:22 +0300 )edit

openrepos syncthing uses a poor gui for starting the services, afaik.

Built-in support for ADB with AlienDalvik (you can do that now, but it's a pain in the ass, requiring you to chroot into alien env and running adb manually).

@pisarz1958: ADB???

Android Debug Bridge, I use my Sailfish OS device for Android development (just one of these courses I need to pass at the uni that I don't really like) and it works fairly well. I'd just rather have a switch in settings instead of having to copy over my adb key from my machine manually (since authorization doesn't work automatically) and running some bash scripts from terminal. I posted a how-to on TJC some time ago.

Restrict mobile operator services, like sending SMS, to such type of networks - its nonsense to display the option to send a SMS to a landline number.

But is it actually possible to reliably detect a phone number is a landline ?

MartinK ( 2018-01-03 12:05:05 +0300 )edit

Hi @MartinK, from my personal practical experience, I do send SMS almost exclusively to known numbers, that means almost always numbers which are assigned to concrete contacts. The entry TEL; TYPE=cell: (123)4567890 is defined as a VCF standard at least on the V2.1 till V4.0 specifications. I specifically do assign mobile and landline numbers to my contacts adhering to those standards, therefore it‘s possible to offer to send SMS messages for corresponding/supported numbers only. Admittedly, it's just cosmetics and a bit of pushing/enforcing standards...

But there are landline phones that support SMS and TTS for SMS on all other phones. Sure, this feature is rarely used, but that should not lead to an unneeded restriction. At most, I'd see an option allowing you to restrict SMS messages to mobile numbers (if you can distinguish them).

ghling ( 2018-01-06 11:59:52 +0300 )edit

You're right, @ghling, of course, but I honestly don't know anyone who has ever intentionally sent a text message to a landline phone number, but some people who have done it unconsciously and then got irritated - and the recipient as well.

A configurable option, the default be set to mobile only, would be an excellent approach IMHO.
