Ahoi Sailors,

I'd really love to have a native Kontalk app for Sailfish. I have a few problems with the android version. For example emojis can't get selected anymore because the native keyboard overlays the emoji keyboard of Kontalk. I'd love to donate 100$ if someone is willing to do that.

As far as I know this is the only real open source encrypted messenger Threema is closed source Whatsapp closed source Telegram closed source servers Signal closed source servers

imho this is the only real solution for encrypted messaging.

AFAIK kontalk is XMPP based and sailfish os already has support for this (without encryption and filetransfer and so on) . The Sailfish XMPP client use telepathy, so we could have kontalk compatible encryption if jolla implement support (a gui) for this. This would make it compatible with far more than kontalk.

I would say OMEMO is also an open source messaging standard, based on XMPP. I use Conversations on SailfishOS and it works quite well. (You can get it at fdroid )

It seems, wire and matrix/riot are as well. Didn't know about them. Wire isn't free of cost though. I'll be looking into matrix, but still - a kontalk client for sailfish would be nice. P.s. I changed the title a bit :-)

Almost everywhere on the internet I come across this question:
"I am looking for a safe alternative to Whatsapp on Sailfish OS."
There seem to be countless of them. But is there one (only one) that works well with basic functionality such as sharing photos and (small) videos? Is there one (yes, only one) that can be easily installed without being obliged to accept Google on my cell phone?
So what about KONTALK ???? Is this the redeeming answer?
1) works fine
2) basic functionality (photo and video sharing)
3) easily installed
4) without "assistance" from Google …

If you have the Android support installed (and you're not using a Jolla 1 which has an old Android version), you can install Signal. It doesn't require Google (the Android support doesn't include any 'Google' stuff), and it works very similar to WhatsApp.

If you don't have the Android support installed, there's also a native Sailfish version of Signal, called Whisperfish, but the original developer left, and the new developer is completely reworking the entire application. The latest available version from the original developer still works fine, but it only really supports sending text and pictures/videos/..., none of the newer functionalities are supported. Still, it may be worth looking into.

I would really appreciate it if the developers of Sialfish OS also took care of a well-functioning social app. "Signal" sounds good ...

As mentioned above Conversations and/or Quicksy (both can be found, e.g., in f-droid) are XMPP based and work very well with encryption, photos, videos, encrypted group chats, etc. And they are completely Google-free. In contrast to Signal, XMPP supports federation (servers from different providers can talk to each other, you can even set-up your own server) and also different clients can talk to each other (e.g. Kontalk and Conversations).

@Mario: different Signal clients can also talk to each other, the only thing it doesn't do is federation.

Probably like many other users, this mobile phone user has a lot of concerns about privacy and what Google and Facebook are up to. But I have absolutely no technical knowledge … That is why I think it is so important that a company such as Sailfish takes up the translation. That does happen for the operating system (when you purchase the right phone) but unfortunately not for the software. (or in my opinion way too little)

According to Sailfish, that is again the user's choice ... "Choose your Social App .."

But that is precisely where there is a major bottleneck. For example, I have no idea of XMPP support., F-droid, etc.

Let Sailfish therefore supply either Kontalk or Signal with their OS (if necessary as a separate download with a very clear manual, which also contains the limitations and possible alternatives. Then I am helped .. (and I think a lot of others)
