It hangs around a while as minimized and then dies. What can be done?

Try deleting cache and application data.

Tried that, it flashed the login screen for a fraction of a second but now does the same.

works here - Giacomos suggestion should work - probably you do that delete spotify and install it from another source

I tried that already a few times, didn't work for me. From which store did you install Spotify?

The normal Android "Store". Have not installed any other.
