Do you really think that Jolla would have announced a major Android upgrade with a small sentence in the middle of a vague blog post? x)

Plus, if it's called Alien Dalvik, it's because it mimics the Dalvik VM, whose latest version will always correspond to Android 4.4

Jolla blog post from January 31st, 2018 (https://blog.jolla.com/sailfish-x-whats-next/) : "Other important areas that we’ll be working on during 2018 are updating the Android runtime compatibility to a newer Android version,..."

Android versions (runtime and hardware adaptation) can conveniently be checked with AIDA64 app, category "Sailfish" (Jolla Store).

For more precision :

  • Android hardware adaptation : the android kernel and blobs which boots the phone and on which libhybris runs. Currently, in Sailfish X's case that's Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow, because that's the Sony firmware from which the binaries and the 3.10.84 kernel are obtained (the "Loire" file that you used to need to download from Sony's website).
  • At some point of the future, that one might change once Jolla moves to the latest kernel 4.4 that is currently provided by Sony for running Android 7 Nougat.
  • Android Runtime is the layer provided (currently by Alien Dalvik) to applications to run on it. It's currently exposing an Android 4.4 Kitkat API.
  • According to Jolla, for Sailfish 3 they plan to upgrade the runtime, so depending on what Myriad provides to them, this might change.

:'( very sad...

Why not use anbox or other opensource solution instead of proprietary aliendalvik? Just curious what is being done to support android apps on sailfish os and how this kind of decisions are made?

mdidaryan ( 2018-09-25 12:04:53 +0200 )edit

@mdidaryan

Have you already done this on Sailfish - can you provide instruction on how to install and run it in Sailfish? Have you at least read what are the requirements for anbox to run on Linux? Have you thought at least more than a second if this is doable?

Honestly I doubt you did

no, yes, yes arrogant answers to arrogant question

mdidaryan ( 2018-09-25 14:02:59 +0200 )edit

There must be something fundamentally wrong with your thought process - unfortunately I can not recommend you to reconsider it, because it is subject to the same problem. A Pity!

I'm just wondering how you would create lxc in Sailfish after deploying couple of kernel fixes and drivers - just show me - I am willing to learn (irony off).

Guys. This is endless discussion! Who need new shiny Android 6, 7, 8 - buy an Android Phone and be Happy! I don't understand, why folks buy Sailfish Phone and asking for Android?

We need mor native SailfishOS Apps - yes, but please forgot about Android. We will never get newer Alien Dalvik than 4.4.4, so let's concentrate on more importand SailfishOS tasks.

But Jolla announced updating it in some blog post ._.

pisarz1958 ( 2018-02-20 15:49:39 +0200 )edit

Version 4.4.4

Tanghus ( 2018-02-22 03:34:11 +0200 )edit

@pisarz1958 Probably you mean the release notes mentioned an upgrade of Alien Dalvik from 1.0.82-1 to 1.0.85-1.

The logic behind hoping update for newer android versions :

  • Sailfish OS is nice OS and, including 3rd party apps from openrepos, covers 95% of daily needs.
  • ... then there's this 1 or 2 apps which don't have Sailfish OS equivalent that you absolutely need and don't wan't to lug an extra android device around just to run them.
  • the original authors are never going to port it to Sailfish OS because for them it's a too small market and not worth the effort.
  • you're happy that Jolla has Myriad's alien-davlik engine so you can fill the last 5% missing gap.
  • then one day, the app manufacturer decide to be a dick and the next upgrade only works with 5 Lollipop or more recent
  • You live in fear of when older non-updated clients are going to get kicked out of the app server.

So yeah, getting more Sailfish OS native apps is important, but our time isn't infinite (we still have to earn money to eat, we can't spend eternity trying to reverse enginee and re-implement every last app)

Sailfish OS is still a small player in the field. The dominant eco-systems are Android and iOS - that's not something that is going to change easily. Most companies won't spend resources developing yet another app for a small market.

Alien-Dalvik plays the same cirtical role to enable accessing missing apps, that Wine plays on desktop Linux installations. (Except that Wine is having a harder time due to Windows being completely closed source with gazillion of badly documented hidden features).

Does Myriad offer an Alien Dalvik version higher than Android 4.4? I can't find any useful information about this on their website.

I thought the problem is that Google switched from Dalvik to ART where 4.4 was the last version of the old Java VM and Alien Dalvik is somehow based on that?

So for supporting Android 5.x and higher Jolla has either to licence a newer Alien Dalvik version if available or to integrate a free solution like Anbox, sfdroid (Development stopped?), Shashlik (Also dead?) or Google's ARC(++) .

Myriad stopped working on Alien Dalvik apparently as they removed references to it from their website.

It's still on their website:

http://www.myriadgroup.com/en/products/device-solutions/mobile-software/alien-dalvik/

Seems the renamed(?) it to Alien Vue to fit it more into the media device market. As they don't mention any new Android version I guess the product is in maintenance state. :(

Ah ok that sounds interesting

Anbox sounds really interesting. I wonder how much work it would take to get working. it would be great to fibally have fine-grained permissions and root in the Sailfish Android layer.

But I noticed that the ebay app for Android is now working I mean that I can install. Before it was saying "your device is not compatible ..."

Maybe there was a little improvement?

But now I think its working because I was downloading the apps and without any disturbance, I get that app and it was not saying your device is not compatible. I was happy. well, you can also go to this link https://www.ticketgateway.com/profile/user_profile_visit/Windows-7-Customer-Support if you are facing the problem related to Microsoft support services.
