Quality Xperia phones

Hi

I'm really annoyed now. Today our third Xperia Phone (2 Xperia X and one Xperia XA2) died.

  1. first one: the touch screen had non responsive regions after about 4 month of use (no water, no crashes). warranty was gone because of the sailfish flash (i didn't backuped the TA partition)
  2. second: I went to swim ...my fault
  3. the xa2: while using android and waiting for the sailfish xa2 release, this morning the screen was frozen. Now the phone is off an I cannot get it to boot. After 3 month of normal use!!!

So 2 of 3 phones died after less than 5 month. My girlfriend has now a new xperia x, but I'm not willing to buy just one more of these shitty xperia phones. The man on the sony support hotline was also very unfriendly :( ...and Jolla support also does not care about any issue with hardware probs.

I'm now wondering if its just bad luck or do the xperia phones have serious quality issues.... I'd really love to still use sfos, but with this creepy hardware, my very long sfos journey (since jolla 1) probably ends now. (the jolla 1 of my girlfriend is still working with a total chrashed display, after lying an afernoon in a puddle on the street....)

have you tried a hard reset on the third one? long press volume up and power at the same time?

yes I tried the 6s and the 120s restart with volume up and power button. ...nothing happend :(

Have you tried charging it for a while, and then resetting?

not yet, but the phone died in the morning after beeing the hole night charging.

My plan now is to wait until the batteriy is empty (maybe there is some battery consumption left, because I get an "usb ist connected" sound when I connect the phone to my computer. ...but computer cannot recognize the device) and then charge again and try to restart. After that I have to send the phone to sony for warranty repair. :(

In EU warranty should not be lost. See legal answer from FSFE for details.

They said, for repairing the touch screen problem they have to replace the mainboard. and the mainboard is not under warranty because of the flashing.

In which country do you live ? Do you have consumer protection groups here around ? That's the point where you should consider contacting them.

Normally in Europe (EU + a few other countries like Switzerland) Sony isn't legally allowed to refuse servicing a visibly faulty component, on the grounds of some software manipulation.

It is obvious the screen was not broken because of software. Similar situations have been corrected by Sony (try search).

You have been quite unlucky. I have understood that Xperia devices should be reliable and I think Sony is good brand. I have friends that have been using Sony phones for many years and the phones are still working properly. It could be that you just had the something made on Monday.

I've actually had a very bad experience with my Sony Xperia X (Sailfish X) too. I bought it last year in December and it started to have upper mic problem during the first six months after the buying. I had also Sailfish installed on it and it broke off so it was difficult to put in a service. But at least in Finland we have very strict consumer laws that protect you. They also state under the EU's 1999/44. But it was a long process since I had to put the phone 4 times in the service. First time they changed motherboard since the mics are directly in there. Second time they claimed everything was working properly when it clearly wasn't. Third time they changed a new screen module and AUX module since I found out that AUX wasn't working either. Fourth time they changed motherboard again. But after the fourth time the phone didn't even boot up so the guy in Verkkokauppa.com's service point just stated that they'll give me money back now since it clearly isn't working anymore. Don't ever put your phone to Mobylife Oy service, it really sucks.

Now I've ordered Xperia XA2 and I hope it won't be this kind of mess with it. XA2 should also be better phone, so I only lost time. Even Jolla stated that the licence could be moved to new XA2 when it's officially supported. So after all everything is all right

Each to his or her own, I am very reluctant to buy anything from Sony. The quality practice that Sony once adopted went out the window some time ago. Back in the late 1980's onwards, Sony was one of the names to buy into, which I certainly did, in 1992 I paid £485 for a nicam/hifi/stereo VHS player (wow, what was I thinking!), barely 18 months elapsed and problems started to emerge, just as they did with my first TV that I bought in 1986 for £180 (todays value nearly £500) and now people are paying similar prices for mass produced smartphones made of plastic and put together with double sided sticky tape!, what is this?, Blue fkin Peter? (British TV program for kids), where the presenter would have designed something for kids to make out of margarine tubs and plastic bottles......perhaps they were actually Sony's main design team :D Oh dear, don;t take my words as a slight against your own tastes and appeals, I don't mean it that way, but me, I really....if I can help it, will not buy into Sony products ever again, albeit I was tempted recently with a user here selling his XperiaX for €30 with a shattered but working screen, but I thought no. I still have 2 x Jolla1's to fk up before I take a look at what will be the current offerings. I may even wait for a Sailfish feature phone, probably also stuck together with elastic bands, double-sided tape and beer mats. ;)

Yup. At least now my Xperia XA2 is working properly. I'm really looking forward to have Sailfish on it :)

In forums (such as talk.maemo.org , some other Xperia X users have reported that, as long as they re-install stock Android, even if they haven't restored the TA partition, they still managed to get the hardware repaired (they never mentioned the missing TA partition while sending for repair).

Maybe try again the sneaky way ?

it is still sad that there has to be a sneaky way. it is a not existing deal between jolla and sony if the warranty is gone on a new phone. jolla has to change that. currently the conditions are as unappealing as they can be. it is a must that jolla offers a way to get devices with warranty- everything else is a farce.

Technically, the problem comes purely from Sony technicians freaking out when they see something unusual.

As pointed by Filip K, in the EU warranty is mandatory for 2 years (there are even talks to extend the warranty period further for some expensive tech gadgets).

If there is damage that is due to faulty components (your phones number 1 and 2 are clearly that) - as opposed to normal wear and tear (your car's tire will obviously wear under normal use) or to malicious damage (e.g.: hitting your phone with a hammer, just for the lulz) the company HAS to honor the warranty and find some way to replace the faulty component (repair the component or swap the whole device).

They can refuse to service the OS given that it's not the original OS (i.e.: don't complain to Sony regarding bugs in Sailfish X). But with EU law, Sony is not legally allowed to refuse to service the screen just because a different software is running on the CPU.

Jolla doesn't need to do anything (the law is already in place).

Sony needs to be told.

If you just want to get your device fixed, just go the sneaky way.

If you want to make changes : then contact your local consumer protection organization (if you live in a country with good organizations, like Germany, Switzerland) and have them mediate the situation, they'll be able to help pushing into compliance.

if it is the case that warranty is not voided : i agree- sony has to be told. and this should happen by jolla. those techies freakin out should have a note by sony+jolla saying "calm down and repair". jolla has to get in contact with sony and support their customers with issues like that and not leave customers hanging. rhis is a textbook support issue in my opinion. a solution for every country - not eu only- has to be communicated. if warranty is voided jolla has to mention that on product pages.

Same here. The first on stopped working after I did not even buy it. The second one broke, when I accidently broke by doing something unwise and the other is shitty because I did not bother to find out which of the 3 buttons to press. :-)

The X I personally use every day is fine. Threw it from 2.3 meters height onto cobblestone pavement: Small scratch on one corner. Smashed heavy stuff on it: Scratch on the metal back. Phone works fine. Screen is still fine. I carry my phone in my trouser pockets and use a cover sometimes.

I'm using GPS navigation a lot, and my Jolla 1 was getting increasingly slow as new versions of OsmAnd & HERE WeeGo kept coming. One day, I accidentally found a 2nd hand Xperia X with SFOS already installed on http://www.bolha.com/ (Slovenian version of eBay or Craiglist). Naturally, I bought it without a 2nd thought.

Xperia X turned out to be a very nice phone, thin, just about the right size, well designed, I like it a lot. It would really be a shame if it would die on me. In this case, I'd just buy another 2nd hand one, I guess. There's plenty of them to go around on Bolha at the moment. But, just in case, I'm keeping my ol'trusty Jolla 1, thanxx for the warning about Xperia.

The problem for me is also, that I don't want to put my phone every few month in service. Now I bought an Ipone SE just to have a phone available, if some of our xperias goes to service.

My brother in law is marketing chef in quite a big company, where they had always sony mobile phones for their empolyees. But now they switched to other manufacturer because of a lot of problems an primaliry because of the bad support at sony. personally I don't know anybody who has a sony phone ....so no experience. Thats why I asked here.
