I would like to have the option to be able to close apps by swiping up from the bottom the same way you swipe down from the top. So, center-swipe down from the top gives me the top menu, center-swipe up from the bottom gives me app menu, swiping at the sides either down from the top or up from the bottom closes app - logical and consistent.

I would suggest a combination of minimizing and closing an application.
Why not like this?
For me it would be the best solution coz no matter how big screens will be in the future, the side is always reachable.
Only a straight swipe would minimize the app and also still possible to peek...
Edit: with regards to the comments. Can be made from both sides but I prefer one for peeking the home screen, one for peeking the notifications. I'm right handed so I only minimize apps from the right side. That's why my kids like drawing shows that. :D
And for another comment: as by now, to the middle and down swipe doesn't trigger the top menu as u can see there:
That also was on my mind some days ago. I would even take the edge out of the gesture and make it a quarter circle, just the natural swipe your thumb does due to it's anatomy. The only issue is that the side movement at the beginning is identical to the peek gesture. This might cause confusion in the system or the user.

And it would avoid a conflict with the peek gesture. No down swipe with a corner, no closed app. Coz the lil quarter circle happens automatically coz as u called it "its anatomy"

this adds both unnecessary redundancy and complexity for the gestures. especially since the new top menu gesture might be revised again (it should imho)
