Trying to update a Jolla tablet to Sailfish OS 3.0.0.8 gives a black screen with no logo or progress bar showing. It won't run or finish the update (as you can't see anything on the screen) via menu "Settings > Sailfish OS updates".

So I shut it down by holding the power button a while until it turned off. I started the device again and it booted into the latest Sailfish OS 2 release, 2.2.0.29.

I had to enable developer mode and connect to the tablet that way and run:

  • devel-su
  • ssu release 3.0.0.8
  • version --dup

After I got the message to reboot the tablet I used the command:

  • shutdown -r now

This way I was able to update the tablet to Sailfish OS 3.0.0.8, but it is certainly not a user-friendly way.

Can you please fix this, so the Jolla tablet can be updated via the user-friendly way in the "Settings" menu.

My tablet updated normally. Also without logo or status bar but after a while it booted up into SF3

Updating my tablet was a nightmare. It took me 6 resets to get SF3 up and running. Never got past the Jolla logo when making the step to SF3. My old jolla phone didn't update successfully by ui - so I had to do the 'version --dup'.

Now I hesitate to try the update on my Xperia X.

+1 for making the ui update process more reliable

I had the same issue, turned off my tablet, rebooted and the system didn't start so I had to reflash. This was already on the last 2.X Version.

During the Update to Sailfish 3 I experienced again this black screen issue an just left the device with power cable connected for some time. After some hours I woke up the tablet and the update was finished.

Please try to wait for some hours with the blackscreen so the update can finish. Would be nice If someone could verify this, so the issue would only be the missing progress screen and no other failure during the update process,

Agree... I did an upgrade on two tablets and both ended successully..... You just can't see any progress bar until it is finished... But as I could see the black screen shining a little bit I assumed that something is working in the background...and it did it successfully at the end. So don't touch it until the device is back ;).

I know this is annoying issue and hopefully Jolla will fix this for upcoming updates.

With me, it also took a loooooong way with a black screen, but finally, the update was fine. The missing status bar, however, should be fixed.

The update on my tablet was without errors, only the missing status bar made me nervous, although I already knew it from the last update. I let the tablet alone, until it finished the update by itself, there is no status bar or notification anymore. It just reboots after some time.

Why do we have to wait for hours while the command line update is just taking minutes. Something is not right there...

@JSE: if the command line option takes only a couple of minutes, it means most of the packages had already been downloaded and installed. Normally it takes about two hours regardless of which way you update.

I have tried to upgrademy Jolla tablet from version 2.2.1.9 to sailfish 3. I downloader new version and start setup. The black screen has been now 24 hours and nothing has happened. Some has wrote and asked to wait some hours. I don't believe that this upgrade will never finish. What to do?

Follow the steps in this post/question. Shut it down by holding the power button a while until it turned off. I starts the device again and it boots into the latest Sailfish OS 2 release... The rest you can read :)

Now, restart using hardware power button. 24 hours is more than enough. You are asked to wait so that all the processes get finished, which generally takes 1-2 hours.
