The search for a different camera app

Hi everyone,

the native camera app isn't as good as most of us hoped (well, at least I hoped for something better than this).

While sometimes and in very beneficial circumstances it can take decent pictures. Most of the times the white balance is off, the shutter has a delay, the autofocus is slow and often not on point, etc.

Personally I'm now searching for a different camera app for my XA2. Openrepos did not reveal anything that would work. Can anyone point me in the right direction or suggest which app I should use? Thanks!

Install Fdroid-Store (Android) and looking for "Open Camera". Install it and activate the Camera2-API in settings. Open Camera is way better than the Jolla camera app. Focus is good and picture are sharp on my XA2.

To access the photos: use an file-manager or rsync. My way: "Simple & quick file backup" from openrepos. It can clone your photos from android folder to your favorite picture-folder.

Simple Camera from F-Droid has some lags and other bugs sometimes, but it offers the chance to make 4k-Videos with XA2 what Open Camera doesn't offer (just Full HD there).

Open Camera offers me 3840x2160 4k UltraHD on my XA2 Plus???

But 4k is not necessary for me... Full HD Video is enough on this small screen.

only option I've ever seeing is CameraPlus. I haven't tried it on 3, but it worked on my X Compact on 2.1.4. You can get it on Openrepos, but the main download link didn't work. There was a fix posted in the comments, either in Openrepos thread or TMO, (I can't remember - maybe someone else here can) - at least back then...Maybe it's been updated by now.

As far as the difference in quality, there's not too much you can do about it with a different app, since there's so much more involved with camera function, and it happens at the rom build - you can't change it afterwards. We'll just have to hope for improvements in future updates... You could possibly get better results with more manual control, if you understand photography. Try some different Android camera apps...

I just tested with Jolla camera and a couple of Android apps, and I don't see much difference...

I just found the working link - https://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=1524623&postcount=128 - installed and tested, and seems to be a little better-quality photos, actually...

Yep, I've also seen CameraPlus on openrepos but the comments there have not been very encouraging to install it. Maybe I'll try nonetheless and see if it even works on the XA2...

Funny that you mention Android support. I'm definitely still missing that for my phone. Not as if I wouldn't spend money to get it, you know. It's just that we all are unable to do so. :-/ Let's hope Jolla delivers this time and releases within a week. Then I'll try some open source camera apps that I might find on F-Droid or wherever and see if that helps at all.

Do you happen to know if it is possible to somehow switch the default camera app? I know it's possible for browser, gallery app, etc. (e.g. through Mimer available on openrepos) but unsure whether it's possible for camera app as well. That would be interesting because I often use the function to open the camera from the lockscreen via swipe up for a quick snapshot here and there.

It's impossible to install CameraPlus on XA2. Following error message occurs:

File'./armv7hl/droid-hal-version-h3113-0.0.7-1.5.11.jolla.armv7hl.rpm' not found on medium 'https://store-repository.jolla.com/releases/3.0.1.11/jolla-hw/adaptation-qualcomm-sony-nile/armv7hl/?credentials=store'

did you try downloading rpm from link and installing manually? Not sure, but that error looks like it's not finding the file... As far as changing default app, Mimer doesn't currently have the camera as an option. I guess it should be possible by editing mimeapps.list file, but I'm not sure what the wording would be to specify a camera-specific file.

That's a common error these days. Packages/repos need to be refreshed (someone who can remember how can tell the command).

The camera app linked works great, however it only works in forced landscape mode. Can't use it in portrait mode at all, so some finetuning needed, at least for XA2.

@laubblaeser Run "devel-su pkcon refresh" on Terminal, should get rid of that error message.

Miracucam in the store is quite nice, and keep an eye out for the wonderful Piggz-o-vision, coming soon to a Sailfish repo near you.

I see a few mentions of Miraccucam in searches, but no trace of a file or link anywhere. Do you have one?

Levone1 ( 2019-01-24 21:29:55 +0300 )edit

Ha - sorry... I actually totally forgot about Jolla Store. I always think Openrepos automatically...

Levone1 ( 2019-01-24 23:21:22 +0300 )edit

Thanks for the tip. MiracuCam is indeed nice in terms of filter options. However, it does not give us previews of taken photos, there's no way to zoom, no way to change white balance, no way to access gallery, etc. It feels unfinished to me and as good as it is for taking filtered pictures (nice options to choose from!), it just is no full replacement of the native camera app.

After seeing a few screenshots from Adam Pigg, I'm very much looking forward to try out Piggz-o-vision. :)

Oh my, i feel the weight of sailfish camera users on my shoulders!

Hi @pigg ! :) Piggz-o-vision release when?

Search camera in Jolla store. I'd link it, but you can't link from Jolla store...
