Soon to flash My XA2 Plus (H4493)

Wondering which binary others are using. Reports that 17B has better battery but 5G wifi doesn't work. What issues have people had with each version?

OS (3.0.2.8) as that's the os version I'll be flashing. Would like Confirmation as I'd like to use Later 17B but if I loose 5G wifi, I'll stick to 16.

Thanks.

Edit.

Looks like 17B is the way to go, as pointed out so far by answers indicating improvements in audio and even android app support. Thanks for you responses everyone.

You can change the underlying SW binaries also after SFOS install (without wiping SFOS) AFAIK https://together.jolla.com/question/201102/release-notes-302-oulanka/?answer=202469#post-id-202469

SFOS won't benefit from 17B though.

Kopekenscheich ( 2019-03-28 11:19:35 +0200 )edit

@Kopekenscheich do you have a reference for this claim? To me, it would be odd if Jolla recommends something that effectively does not have any effect.

bomo ( 2019-03-28 11:21:30 +0200 )edit

@Kopekenscheich thanks, but he says that it brings stability upgrades. Moreover, this was for 3.0.1 (or at least some time before the final 3.0.2 release). Who knows whats the final situation with 3.0.2 (for which they have made the info to use V17B preferably)?

I just flashed 17B and can say that some things are working better

  • Most importantly for me: Google Translate now downloads offline translations! It was one of the few Android apps that i use regularly that wasn't working as I needed.
    • In terms of other apps that use Google Play Services for login - after doing this and installing MicroG most of them started working: https://github.com/yeoldegrove/sailfish-signature-spoofing
    • Those that were still problematic were fixable by installing 1-year older versions of the app from the Aptoid store (previous versions). I use gQueues that wasn't working until I figured this out

I didn't even see the comment in the 3.0.2.8 Changelog about upgrading to 17B. This thread clued me in to the option. So thanks OP

Welcome.

And the feed back is valuable and thank you for it. Plus link to spoofing that i'll do on mine as well.

You may get stuck at one point.. Make sure you run the firewall (iptables) command before the rsync command on your phone.

Otherwise it's smooth sailing: Then use F-droid and https://microg.org/download.html

Did you make a complete reinstall or only flash the binary?

lqs01 ( 2019-03-29 01:46:59 +0200 )edit

@Crypto can you check if Google Music work with this build?

Stanislav1988 ( 2019-03-29 18:23:54 +0200 )edit

@Crypto how did apply this binary update? did you reflash your device completely ? or you were able to upgrade only the binary? and how were you able to do that ?

My vote would be to use 17B.

I had v16 and found issues with GSM call quality and Bluetooth audio.

Since reflashing with 17B, I've found that the GSM buzz during calls in completely gone and that Bluetooth audio seems to work better.

Thanks for the feed back on GSM audio.

Did you flash only Sony binaries or the whole SFOS stack?

I actually did a clean install of 3.0.2.8..

It needed to be done as I had been messing around and experimenting :-)

Running like a fine clock now!

durneyj ( 2019-03-29 09:50:08 +0200 )edit

clean install means completely re-flashed right?

cemoi71 ( 2019-03-29 18:27:47 +0200 )edit

yep - complete reflash.

there's a handy post about flashing just the binaries but I wanted to do a clean install and try the recovery from dropbox functionality...

Thanks, I'll give 17B a go then. Jolla recommends it so I'm assuming they will build upgrades targeted against 17B

GD ( 2019-03-28 22:40:23 +0200 )edit

Unfortunately can't confirm this for my XA2 Plus Dual SIM. 5G-Wifi cuts out frequently, and doesn't work at all when I connect the phone to the charger. Since my wifi at home is 5G only, I flashed back to v16, where it works flawlessly (except for the high battery drain issue). Im on the latest SFOS 3.0.2.8, so it should be compatible.

no one remarked that the checksum reported on sony dev side for the 17B is the one of the v17 uncorrected ?

It lools like they really had to rush 17B out.

I was a bit nervous before flashing it due to the mismatch. Happy to see that Sony eventually updated the download page. (i.e.: not a hack with some malware baked into the hacked zip)

DrYak ( 2019-04-02 21:36:45 +0200 )edit

@DrYak thx for the news, that's right the checksum is now correct.
Errors Happens to big one too, good that someone cleaned it afterwards.
That was just for me to have a little bit fun about the big and serious firm ... ;-)

Alright, now I did it, too (H3113 & H 4493). I have not noticed any positive difference yet but at least nothing got worse, either. Just to say: Et werx.

My words, too. No difference yet. Still getting random battery drainage, WLAN disabled or not.
