I know this question was already raised, but this app is very crucial for me (and i think for others too).

https://github.com/aebruno/whisperfish

I even would pay for the development of a working native signal client. So what to do? Maybe crowdfunding is a possible solution. If a developer would start such a crowdfunding initiative for adopting whisperfish i would support him or her.

What do you think? Would you support crowdfunding for whisperfish?

What a great idea! 👍 I'm in!

I need whisperfish so much, it's working fine, but how long will it do without support?

Is there any easier way to install it than the terminal commands on that GitHub link? Been using .rpms from OpenRepo, Storeman and Jolla Store for everything else. Would love to use a working signal client, long term support crowdfund I'd back!

If you don't have to stay with the Whisperfish UI one possible solution could be to add a Signal protocol module to the proposed Multi Protocol Chat Client

The Nextcloud chat would be very welcome also. And the good old integrated chat from the N900 ;-)

@HaydGately: there's a releases page, you can grab an RPM from there and install it on your device: https://github.com/aebruno/whisperfish/releases

It still works, but has some bugs and doesn't support any of the new Signal features. The good thing is that you can easily link it to the official desktop client (which, unfortunately, is a stupid Electron application, but it's better than nothing), which won't stop working even if Whisperfish does.

No, I believe a centralized platform for our (chat) communication is bad idea in general. It doesn't matter if the communication is E2E encrypted, or whether the code is open source is not. Eventually, the platform might go in directions which are not beneficial to the users, e.g. ads, the requirement of using official apps only, other restrictions. In such case, the user should have the ability to switch providers, without loosing the connection to his network.

In principle, I prefer the "e-mail model": mostly decentralized, both free and commercial providers, and the ability to host it yourself if you're inclined to. So I'd rather support further development of Matrix and XMPP clients.

Last week I read an interesting article about a team working on an open source alternative using IMAP and SMTP protocols. The advantage is that everybody could use his email account for doing an instant message chat with any other email account. For me that sounds promising.

Unfortunately, the article is in German. You can probably translate it to your needs: https://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/Chatten-per-Mail-Open-Source-Veteranen-wollen-WhatsApp-Konkurrenz-machen-4351631.html

I also believe centralized platforms are a recipe for disaster, still I think what the original poster had probably in mind was to make sure an existing protocol is supported on Sailfish because of external requirements (means: other people using this protocol).

More often than not trying to convince people to switch to e.g. Matrix won't work. For an average Android user who will neither know Matrix nor care enough abut privacy and/or operational stability to switch to Matrix this would mean another inconvenience especially when he/she is used to being spied on by Google anyway.

@spag thx for your answers. As long as the signal protocol is working and i am able to have conversation with people using signal i am all fine (multi protocol chat client would be awesome). I took me some time to convince friends & family to use signal and i want do this again for xmpp or matrix...

While I also think that decentralized federated chat (like IRC, XMPP, Matrix, etc.) are a better way to go.

But the thing is, you don't get to choose what your friends are using, like @spag mentioned.

There is a fork of whisperfish on gitlab now: https://gitlab.com/rubdos/whisperfish

The author ported the app to use the native signal c library. Have not tested it yet, though.

The last commit is already 2 months old and the link to nightly builds is stale. I'm wondering if this project has already been abandoned.

@jollajo I don't think so, because the developer is still posting and replying to issues.

nthn ( 2019-10-01 16:20:28 +0300 )edit

I downloaded a nightybuild but it is not working so far on my Jolla 1 with 3.1.0.11

I posted the logs from terminal in gitlab.
