Hey,

Just wanted to show these things since nobody else seems to do anything. These bugs have existed since the release of Sailfish X beta for XA2 Dual Sim and still exists in 3.1.0.11 Seitseminen. If I use 4G the battery drain is ~25% for 8 hours (a nights sleep). I have worked around the problem by switching to prefer 3G which works semi ok. I can get 48+ hours worth of battery time if I don't use the phone at all.

I can witness the same drop in CPU usage when connecting a charger as in this thread https://together.jolla.com/question/192789/battery-life-xa2-4113-sailfish-3008/

It does not matter if I have mobile data enabled. Just connecting to 4G and disabling mobile data over night yields the same result -25% battery charge.

The first image shows behaviour similar to the thread that is supposedly marked as fixed

Second screenshots which are from before show different cpu usage after boot.

The last picture is from Sailfish X on Xperia X Using 4G network with mobile data disabled. It has incredible battery life. I wish this was fixed for XA2 Dual Sim as well.

I have not encountered the same problem as you. When my xa2 uses 4g, the battery consumption is 4% after one night. I hope that your problem can be resolved soon.

As mentioned on the other thread, I get ~4-5%/hour drop on 4G and it doesn't matter if I use WiFi/BT/GPS or whatnots in addition. With 3G the battery drop is close to 1-2%/hour, even with the latest (3.1.) OS release.

I have very similar behaviour on my XA2 dual sim. The battery consumption is noticeably bigger on 4G than on 3G. With latter I can manage easily three days, with 4G a bout a day and a half. Lately I've been using airplane mode during nights, this the battery lose 1-2 per cent overnight.

Same behaviour also ob my XA2 dual sim. With 3G overnight takes 3-4% but with 4G about 40%. This problem has been from the start sailfish X on my phone

I am using the XA2 Dual SIM constantly in 4G without such problem

So I think I finally figured out what the problem is. Or then it has been fixed in the latest version. Just enabled BOTH wifi and 4G. Tada. lost 6% of battery during the night. Seems really counter-intuitive but I observed similar behaviour on Android with Xperia X so I thought I'd give it a try. This should really be mentioned in some kind of noob tutorial or something.

For the benefit of future readers, with 'latest version' do you mean SFOS 3.2.1 ?

simosagi ( 2020-01-31 14:41:02 +0200 )edit

Yes, version 3.2.1

Do you have v16 or v17B Sony vendor image? Is your WLAN access points 5GHz?

Jusla ( 2020-01-31 19:07:49 +0200 )edit

17B and 5GHz

So at least for me, I'm still experiencing battery drain exactly when 4G is on, XA2 Dual-Sim, Sailfish 3.3.0.14 and Finnish operator Elisa. The reason why I'm writing this as an answer is that I'm baffled how come Jolla doesn't recognize / confess this issue even though a lots of people have this exact issue with 4G draining our batteries. And I don't want to come as a whining person but this drain is not normal and it's well sure it lies somewhere in Sailfish rather than in hardware for example.

I tried to re-flash Sailfish with Sony v17B binaries in the hope that it could fix this drain and other issues too. Well, obviously it didn't fix the 4G drain. The issue is instantly fixed by switching to 3G and I got maybe 2% battery drain in 5-6 hours. As people (and I) have mentioned in the comments that the 4G drain is approximately 3-5% per hour which is a quite significant amount. I have also noticed that the drain happens exactly on 2% steps, so when the phone is on 4G idling and I have for example battery at 90% it goes straight to 88% and skips 89% instantly.

First of all, I live right next to a base station (about 30-40m) and the signal strength can't be the issue and I've checked the dBm are ok. Also I experience this exact drain everywhere regardless of my position or signal strength. There's no place at least in Tampere, Finland where I wouldn't experience 4G battery drain. Also I've been using my XA2 Dual-Sim with the stock Android for months before I flashed Sailfish and I never experienced any battery drain related to 4G or network in general. I've also had the same operator Elisa for years now and never have experienced any drain on other devices when it comes to network. This was the case with the Xperia X (with Sailfish installed) too when I had it between 2017-2018, no drain ever.

So what do you guys think? Do we have lots of bad networks or hardware failures? Or could it be that there's really something wrong with Sailfish. I also want to point out that this wouldn't be the first case when there are issues with network in Sailfish ;)

In my opinion, Jolla really should take a look at this issue since in the end working network is a necessity for most of us. On the other hand, it can't be that I have to switch between the networks all the time just to avoid battery drain due to some issues that are primarily unknown.

Same 4G battery issue, Xperia 10 3.3.0.14 and Elisa network. My XA2 had the same problem.

I thought the problems I had with XA2 were because I think I didn't test the phone enough on Android before flashing so I tested everything now.

So 4G still practically unusable at least on Elisa network. I hope this is fixed before 3G is shut down 2023 :).

thanks for bringing this topic up here...

My XA2 is still on 3.2 but it is exactly as you describe: 4G unusable because it drains the battery much too fast!

If the issue is in the Android driver which is proprietary Jolla is out of luck and cannot fix the issue. I assume the AOSP version has this bug aswell and so it is caused by the Android driver.

@leszek, could you maybe shed light into how come it would be Android driver issue or especially AOSP since I know this issue happens even without Android support on or installed at all? And on the other hand if it's the AOSP case shouldn't there then be even more people to fix this kind of issue in an open source project (if it's even possible to fix).

AOSP drivers are used on SailfishOS to access hardware. Sony Xperia OpenDevice Program is not really so popular that bugs get fixed easily or quickly. In general third party Android images are in a jeopardy anyway nowadays

although not a real solution, this idea helps a lot: https://together.jolla.com/question/227791/35-days-of-battery-instead-of-15-days-because-of-intelligent-network-switch/

I think the problem is not in the 4G, but in the signal strength.
I live in a village near Madrid, narrow streets and communications are not great, here is the result of putting my XA2 on the table of my studio:

image description
Consumption of 3,25% by hour :

Now on the table at living room:

image description

Consumption of 0,50% by hour :
Signal at studio: between -100 and -102 dBm
Signal at Living Room: between -91 and -89 dBm

Now with the WIFI ON:
image description

My conclusion is that the problem is in signal quality, and this includes WIFI, I made other measurements with only WIFI and the result are +/- the same. I think we should not look for a problem in 4G / 3G, but rather improve a little bit the management of the system when the signal strength is bad.

1,27% by hour without WIFI and 1,39% with WIFI is not a big difference.
But, for me, the main problem of the XA2 is the battery.

So if the signal strength is bad I have to switch over to 3G to save battery? How can I check signal strength?

I use another phone with Android, the app is "Network Cell Info".
