Hi!
What is the best approach for the access of photos and other files stored files on the SD card in Android apps? Are symlinks still the 'official' ways? The containerization might have changed the solutions in SailfisOS 3 (3.1.0.11).

Assuming you use XA2 since I'm not aware that any other model has problems with it.
Aliendalvik Control(openrepos.net) makes folder called sd under android_storage what points to SD card. That way it is possible to browse and select photos if app let you select them. My image editing app sees photos after I browsed to camera folder with save location selector. For fixed locations it propably don't work. From Gallery It's possible to share photos to some apps.
Hope this helps. Might not be best way but could work depending on needs.
And: Using Aliendalvik Control I found out that there is an additional probem: Whatsapp does not support the fotos I made using Advance Camera app! (So fotos made by Advanced Camera are not shown)
wosrediinanatour ( 2019-08-28 11:40:04 +0200 )editI don't have any knowledge but guess Whatsapp looks for folders that have common names like DCIM, Camera or something. AdvancedCam folder is same level as Camera where normal camera saves photos. This might be example of fixed locations.
Just for curiosity, does Whatsapp see normal photos from SD? I haven't had time to test that my self yet.

Citing the release notes for 3.3.0:
Many Android apps can access the SD card, now. For instance, OsmAnd and HERE WeGo map apps can save the offline map tiles to the card. Likewise, Spotify can save the music to the card. Apps like WhatsApp can attach pictures from the SD card to messages now. The card name must not contain spaces.
